“A mad love of golf in perpetual adaptation mixed with a respect for the primordial essence of this discipline… allowed him to shake up French golf more than anyone else…” wrote André-Jean Lafaurie in his Golf Lovers Dictionary.
The list is long, very long, to summarize all the achievements of this passionate, visionary, elegant entrepreneur, refusing the fashionable spotlight to favor discussions between friends and experts.
He first experienced golf as a champion: from the age of 15, Gaëtan Mourgue d’Algue represented France in numerous international competitions. He was French champion in 1967 and 1968 and won numerous national and international titles.

He shared this passion with his wife, Cécilia Mourgue d’Algue, one of the greatest champions of French amateur golf with 45 national, individual and team titles. Then with his children: the family collected 105 titles between them!
In 1963, with his father, he participated in hosting the Canada Cup in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, the ancestor of the professional team World Cup. Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer won there in front of a French public who discovered the greatest world champions for the first time. This competition contributed to bringing French golf into a new international dimension.
In the late 1960s he chaired the Association for the Promotion of Golf. His goal already went beyond just competitive golf. In January 1970, the association announced the future creation of initiation centers and courses open to the public at affordable prices, with the stated desire to expand the number of practitioners of a sport still largely reserved for a minority.
This conviction – golf had to develop and reach new audiences – will remain the common thread of all its action.
The same year, with his friend and early associate, Dominique Motte, he created the Lancôme Trophy in Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche. For more than thirty years, the tournament welcomed the greatest players in the world, from Arnold Palmer and Gary Player to Severiano Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino and David Duval. The Lancôme Trophy contributed decisively to putting France on the map of international professional golf and to bringing the French public closer to the champions that until then they could only see playing abroad.
Original in promoting golf to the general public, Gaëtan Mourgue d’Algue did not hesitate to imagine new operations during the Lancôme Trophy. In 1976 and then in 1977, Arnold Palmer, the great popular star of the time, hit drives from the second floor of the Eiffel Tower towards the Champ-de-Mars. These images went around the world.
In the same spirit, Gaëtan Mourgue d’Algue actively participated in the emergence of professional golf in continental Europe, then largely dominated by Great Britain and Ireland. His action, carried out in particular with Mark McCormack and IMG, accompanied the beginnings of what would become the great European professional circuit.
His commitment quickly went beyond French borders. A life member of the Royal & Ancient of St Andrews, he contributed to the development of major competitions in continental Europe and the creation of the professional circuit in South America. In Morocco, he understood the importance of golf tourism and created the Hassan II Trophy, which became one of the major golf events on the African continent.
Passionate, he also paid particular attention to young players and emerging talents. Through competitions dedicated to them, such as the Cacharel Open, the first professional World Championship for under-25s, which revealed among others the immense talent of Greg Norman, José Maria Olazabal, Nick Faldo and Bernhard Langer, winner in 1979, and Ian Woosnam in 1982.
A precursor, he also wanted to contribute to the visibility and development of women’s golf, by organizing competitions allowing the best professional players to perform in France, such as the Hennessy Cup in 1985. For Gaëtan Mourgue d’Algue, promoting golf meant showing all its facets and addressing all its audiences.
With his partner, Dominique Motte, in 1970 he bought the magazine Tennis et Golf to make it Golf Européen, the largest golf magazine in France and continental Europe. Showcasing the routes was also at the heart of its editorial activity. Based on an idea from Dominique Motte, in 1995 he launched the first real guide to European golf courses, the Peugeot Golf Guide. He went even further in 2010 with the very ambitious creation of the Rolex Golf Guide, with a selection
