Nico Echavarria has admitted that he has some concerns about Brian Rolapp’s plans for the future of the PGA Tour, even though the Colombian golfer likes a lot of what the new CEO is trying to do.

The PGA Tour is preparing for a different structure from 2028. The top level will be called the Championship Series, while the Challenger Series will give other players a route to promotion.

Rolapp has stressed that the idea is to make the best players face each other more often and to create clearer consequences during the season. However, Echavarria says the changes may be moving too quickly for some tournament sponsors.

The 32-year-old recently spoke with a sponsor involved in one of the Tour’s bigger events and heard a different side of the story.

“I might get in trouble with this. I don’t consider myself a smart person, so I’m glad I’m not making any of the decisions right now, but I recently had a conversation with, I’m not going to mention the name, but he’s the main sponsor of a really big event, and I finally heard the other side.

“I think what they’re doing is really good. What Brian wants is really good, but maybe it’s a little too aggressive, where contracts have been signed for X amount, and all of a sudden things change and, ‘hey, you’ve got to pay us more money’,” Echavarria said.

Echavarria heard the sponsor side

The three-time PGA Tour winner then explained that the conversation gave him information he normally does not hear as a player.

“It gave me a perspective of the other side that I don’t see, and it was interesting to talk to him. ‘Hey, we’ve been doing this tournament for this many years, we’ve grown this much, the charity has received this amount, and all of a sudden, they want to have a meeting because everything’s changing’.

“I’m glad I’m also not making any decisions on the other side.”

The Tour has already confirmed that Championship Series events will have purses of at least $20 million. The schedule is expected to include around 23 or 24 events when the big championships, The Players Championship and team competitions are included.

Regular Championship Series tournaments are expected to have fields of around 120 golfers. The Challenger Series will have at least 20 events, with fields closer to 144 players and purses of at least $4 million.

There will also be promotion and relegation. At least 20 Challenger Series golfers will move to the Championship Series each year, while players near the bottom of the top level could lose their place.

A recent business report said the Tour has been asking for more than $30 million per year from some Championship Series title sponsors. Sompo has already signed a deal that will see it sponsor a full-field event in 2027 before moving to a Championship Series tournament in 2028.

The Tour has also said it has received a lot of interest from partners. Several Championship Series events have already been announced, with the full schedule expected to be presented in February 2027.

Echavarria has a big season of his own

Echavarria is speaking about the future while also having another important year on the course.

The Colombian won the Cognizant Classic in March for his third PGA Tour title. He finished on 17-under and beat Shane Lowry, Taylor Moore and Austin Smotherman by two shots.

That victory also helped Echavarria secure exempt status through 2028. He has made 16 cuts in 24 PGA Tour starts this season, with three top-10 finishes and more than $3.8 million in official earnings.

The 32-year-old will also represent the International Team at the Presidents Cup at Medinah. It will be his first appearance in the competition.

He was one of the captain’s picks after finishing eighth in the International Team standings. Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Ryo Hisatsune are among the other players selected for the team.

Echavarria is currently playing the Biltmore Championship Asheville before heading to Medinah. The Fall event includes several Presidents Cup players and arrives just days before the team competition begins.

Rolapp, meanwhile, has continued to defend the 2028 model. The PGA Tour CEO said the system is based on meritocracy and is designed to give fans a clearer understanding of what players are competing for.

The Colombian did not reject those goals. His concern is more about how quickly the business side may change for sponsors who already have contracts and long relationships with tournaments.

With more Championship and Challenger Series deals expected to be announced over the coming months, sponsors and players will get a clearer picture of what the PGA Tour will look like in 2028.
