Michael Kim has explained why Tiger Woods joining the PGA Tour Champions may not immediately bring the financial effect many golf fans expect.
Woods turned 50 at the end of last year and is now eligible to play on the senior tour.
Since walking has been one of the biggest problems for the 15-time Grand Slam tournament winner in recent years, many have suggested that the Champions Tour could be a good option for him because players are allowed to use golf carts there. The possibility of seeing Tiger compete again has created a lot of interest, but Kim stressed that the financial side is not as simple as it may look.
“Lots of Tiger comments. It sounds like a massive financial boost immediately but in actuality it’s not that simple,” Kim wrote on X.
“If Tiger doesn’t announce the tournament he’s going to well beforehand, they can’t sell extra hospitality and sponsors based on Tiger being there. Then they have to find last minute parking, extra security at spots that aren’t ready to handle that many people.
It’s a lot of logistical stuff that the tournament has to organize quickly for not a ton of immediate dollars. If he comes back each yr that’s obviously a whole different story.”

Kim explains the problem with a late Woods announcement
Woods remains probably the biggest name in golf, and there is little doubt that his appearance at a Champions Tour event would create much more attention than usual. However, Kim pointed out that tournaments need enough time to prepare if they want to make the most of that attention financially.
Extra hospitality, sponsorship opportunities, security and parking cannot simply be organized at the last moment. A regular return over several events would be a different situation because tournaments could make plans around Woods well in advance.
The Champions Tour itself has already been preparing for the possibility of Tiger eventually playing there. Woods became eligible after turning 50 on December 30, 2025, but he has yet to make his debut. He has not played an official competitive tournament since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship, although he has continued practicing and has appeared in TGL.
The American has dealt with many physical problems during the later part of his career. He underwent another back procedure in 2025 after already going through several surgeries, while the injuries from his 2021 car accident have also made walking long golf courses much more difficult.
Earlier this year, Woods admitted that playing on the Champions Tour is something he has thought about.
“The disc replacement has been one thing. It’s been a challenge to… I’ve had a fused back and now a disc replacement, so it’s challenging,” Woods said.
“And now I entered a new decade, so that number is starting to sink in and has us thinking about the opportunity to be able to play in a cart. That’s something that, as I said, I won’t do out here on this tour because I don’t believe in it. But on the Champions Tour, that’s certainly that opportunity.”

Woods has refused to use a cart on PGA Tour
Tiger has been quite clear in the past that he does not want to use a golf cart in normal PGA Tour competition, even though physical problems have affected his ability to walk 18 holes.
“On the PGA Tour, no. On the sanctioned events where it’s allowed, yes, which is the Champions Tour, PNC, things of that nature,” Woods previously said.
“I think walking is an integral part of the game at our level and I will never take a golf cart until it’s sanctioned. It’s sanctioned on the Champions Tour and the PNC is part of that. As far as a regular event, no, I would never do that.”
Jack Nicklaus has also spoken about the possibility of Woods eventually joining the senior circuit. The 18-time Grand Slam tournament champion previously claimed that Tiger wanted to play there and stressed that his competitive nature remained.
“I told him, ‘Tiger, you’re eligible to take a cart.’ He says, ‘I’m not going to do that.’ He says, ‘When I get to the senior tour, I will,’” Nicklaus said before later adding, “He wants to play the senior tour.”

Woods has not yet confirmed when his next competitive appearance will happen. He was seen practicing at Liberty National Golf Club in September and said he could “hit pretty much anything,” but there is still no official tournament on his schedule.
The 50-year-old has won 82 PGA Tour titles, tied with Sam Snead for the most in history, while his 15 Grand Slam tournament victories leave him behind only Nicklaus. Because of that record and his popularity, any appearance on the Champions Tour would likely attract a lot of attention.
