Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TGL has confirmed when its third season will begin, while the indoor golf league is also preparing several changes after its first two years.

The new season will start on December 27 at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The opening match and exact start time have not yet been announced, while the complete schedule is expected to be revealed before the season begins.

TGL will again be shown on ESPN after the network and TMRW Sports agreed a new multi-year media rights deal.

ESPN has been the domestic home of the competition since its launch and will continue to show the league in the United States.

The competition was created by Woods and McIlroy together with TMRW Sports and has tried to offer golf fans something different from regular PGA Tour events.

Matches are played indoors, combining simulator shots with real short-game play around the green.

TGL confirms December return

“TGL has given golf something genuinely new, with top PGA Tour players competing in a fast-paced, made-for-primetime team format that puts fans closer to the action than ever before,” ESPN executive Rosalyn Durant said.

Rufus Hack, president of golf for TMRW Sports, also stressed how important ESPN has been during the first two seasons.

“ESPN has been the ultimate partner in helping establish TGL, combining unparalleled promotion, reach and sports presentation,” Hack said.

The league attracted 21.782 million viewers across its second season, compared to 20.215 million during the first campaign.

The opening match of the second season between Atlanta Drive GC and New York Golf Club averaged 646,000 viewers on ABC and reached more than 700,000 viewers at different stages of the broadcast.

The final later produced even better numbers.

Los Angeles Golf Club defeated Woods’ Jupiter Links Golf Club 9-2 on March 24, and the match averaged 989,000 viewers on ESPN.

It became the most-watched TGL broadcast of the second season and the second-most-watched match since the league started.

The final was also notable because Woods returned to competition after undergoing back surgery.

The 15-time major champion has remained one of the biggest names connected to the project, although injuries have limited how often he has been able to compete in traditional golf over the last few years.

McIlroy is another central figure in TGL and plays for Boston Common Golf.

The Northern Irishman has repeatedly spoken about the need for golf to find different ways to attract younger fans, and the shorter indoor format was created partly with that type of audience in mind.

Motor City and Koepka join the league

The third season will also bring expansion.

Motor City Golf Club will become the seventh team in TGL, joining Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club.

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka has already been announced as the first player on Motor City’s roster.

It will be the 36-year-old’s first season in the competition.

Koepka was not able to play during the first two TGL seasons because he was still part of LIV Golf. The American left LIV earlier this year and returned to the PGA Tour, opening the door for him to join the indoor league.

“The addition of Motor City Golf Club this season builds on that momentum, bringing a great sports city and passionate fan base into TGL as we continue to grow the league,” Hack said.

More names are expected to be confirmed for Motor City before the start of the season.

Koepka’s arrival also gives the competition another player who has spent a long period among the best golfers in the world.

The Florida resident has won five major championships during his career and previously reached world No. 1.

Los Angeles Golf Club will enter the third season as defending champion after its victory over Jupiter Links earlier this year.

Atlanta Drive won the first TGL title before Los Angeles took the trophy in season two.

The men’s competition will also start only five days after the conclusion of the first WTGL season.

WTGL, an indoor team competition featuring LPGA players, begins on November 8 and is scheduled to finish on December 22.

Its matches will also be shown across ESPN, ABC and ION.

TGL will then return on December 27 as Woods, McIlroy and the other players begin another season at the SoFi Center.

The full schedule has not yet been announced, but seven teams will now compete as the league continues trying to grow after its first two seasons.
