Nicklaus sends message to Scheffler

Nicklaus shared his reaction on Instagram and explained what he was thinking while watching Scheffler come down the stretch in Atlanta.

“As I watched yesterday’s @tourchampionship, and saw @scottie.scheffler come down the stretch, I said to myself, ‘I fully expect him to win.’ And he did.

“Scottie, you played smart. You played well. You deserved to win. Best player in the world right now! I congratulate you on your victory and FedExCup Playoff win. Barbara and I wish you, Meredith and your family continued success!”

Coming from Nicklaus, those words carry quite a lot of weight. The 18-time major champion has watched many generations of golfers, and he has also spoken positively about Scheffler several times during his rise to world No. 1.

Scheffler did not make the final round easy for himself at the beginning of the week. Still, he stayed close enough to Hovland and then produced his best golf when it mattered most.

The American had already shown something similar two weeks earlier at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he turned a two-shot 54-hole lead into an eight-shot victory. That was his second win of 2026, following his victory at The American Express in January.

His season between those wins was full of close finishes. Scheffler was runner-up at the Masters, RBC Heritage, Cadillac Championship, Travelers Championship and 3M Open. Nicklaus was not the only golf legend who sent Scheffler a message after East Lake. Tiger Woods also congratulated the world No. 1, particularly after Scheffler moved past him on the PGA Tour’s all-time career money list.

“Three wins, five runner-ups and finishing the season No. 1,” Woods wrote. “Those are some numbers to be proud of. Incredible consistency all season long. Congrats on a historic season, Scottie.”

Scheffler’s career earnings have now moved past $130 million, although he has already pointed out that comparing prize money from different eras is not completely fair. Before the Tour Championship, he credited Woods for helping grow the game and increase the money available to players today.

For Scheffler, the numbers are only one part of the story. His coach and caddie have often spoken about how much he simply likes competing, whether it is a big tournament or an event where there is less pressure around him.

That mentality was visible again late in the season. Scheffler played the BMW Championship while dealing with hand, foot and mouth disease and still finished tied 12th, despite doctors advising him to withdraw. A week later, he arrived at East Lake and ended the season with another trophy.

He now joins Woods and Rory McIlroy as the only players to win the FedEx Cup more than once. McIlroy remains ahead with three titles, while Scheffler has two after winning in 2024 and 2026.
