Oliver Wilson has confirmed that his long professional golf career has reached its end after playing one final time at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Englishman received a sponsor invitation for the DP World Tour event and returned to a tournament which has a special place in his career.

Wilson recorded rounds of 72, 72 and 70 and missed the cut by four shots, but the result was not the main story for the 46-year-old.

After more than two decades as a professional, the former Ryder Cup player confirmed that this was his last tournament.

“Over & Out! This week was my last event on the DP World Tour after 20+ years,” Wilson wrote on social media.

“It was my first & last start of the year, and I loved every bit of preparing to get back out there. Got my game in good shape and had it going nicely yesterday but came up a little short.

There’s nowhere I’d rather finish than the Dunhill Links. Winning here will always be one of the highlights of my life, and walking these fairways one last time in tournament mode means a lot.”

Wilson also thanked those involved with the tournament and the people who helped him prepare for his last appearance.

“A huge thank you to Doug Spencer for getting me prepped and caddying all week and motivated this past couple of years,” he added.

“I’ve learnt a lot and can only wonder what might have been if we’d met sooner but either way it’s been an incredible ride.”

Wilson ends career at place of his first DP World Tour win

Finishing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship had extra meaning for Wilson because this was also the place where he finally won his first DP World Tour title in 2014.

His victory at St Andrews came after a difficult period of his career.

Wilson had previously finished runner-up nine times on the European Tour and had lost his full playing rights before receiving an invitation to compete at the tournament.

He was ranked No. 792 in the world at the time and few expected him to fight for the trophy.

Wilson did much more than simply compete.

The Englishman finished on 17-under and held off Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Richie Ramsay by one shot to finally take his first title.

“So many people had written me off and that hurt, but I kept believing,” Wilson said after that victory.

A lot of people had a part in this and I can’t thank them enough. This is pretty special.”

The win gave him playing rights for another two seasons and came in what was his 230th attempt to win on the Tour.

Before that difficult period, Wilson had already experienced one of the greatest moments of his career when he represented Europe at the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla.

He played twice during that event.

Wilson partnered Henrik Stenson to defeat Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim 2&1 in the Saturday foursomes before losing his singles match against Boo Weekley.

The United States eventually won the Ryder Cup 16.5-11.5.

Wilson found his way back again in 2022: Wilson won the Made in HimmerLand tournament in Denmark

Wilson’s career had several difficult periods after his 2014 victory, and there were moments when he considered leaving professional golf.

But another good period arrived several years later.

He won twice on what is now the HotelPlanner Tour in 2018 before returning to the winner’s circle on the DP World Tour in 2022.

Wilson won the Made in HimmerLand tournament in Denmark by one shot for his second DP World Tour title.

That victory came almost eight years after his success at the Dunhill Links.

It was another example of Wilson finding results after a long period without a trophy.

As his playing career slowed down, the Englishman also started working in other parts of golf.

He has appeared as an analyst for BBC Sport and has also worked on LIV Golf coverage for TNT Sports.

Coaching has become another part of his work in recent years.

Wilson can now concentrate more on those roles after officially ending his time as a professional player.

His career included two DP World Tour victories, a Ryder Cup appearance and many years competing around Europe and other parts of the world.

The final result at St Andrews was not what Wilson wanted, but returning to the same tournament where he produced one of the best moments of his career gave him a fitting place to finish.
