LIV Golf players have been given more time to decide whether they want to stay with the league for the 2027 season.

The original deadline was October 13, but it has now been moved to October 25 as LIV continues working on a new structure following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in September. The decision gives some of the biggest names in golf almost two extra weeks to think about what they want to do next.

BC Partners Credit has agreed to provide funding which could eventually reach $300 million, although the deal still needs approval from the bankruptcy court. The investment is expected to help LIV continue into 2027 while also changing the way the league operates. Under the proposed model, players could receive equity in LIV Golf and their individual teams, giving them a direct financial interest in the competition.

“Our goal is to facilitate LIV Golf’s emergence from the restructuring process on sound financial footing and with renewed momentum heading into the 2027 season,” BC Partners Credit Partner and Head of Credit Ted Goldthorpe said.

“Just as importantly, we want the players who make this league what it is to share in what they help build. Giving players real and actionable ownership in the League and the teams is a unique opportunity in professional golf, and it aligns everyone around the long-term success of the product for the game and for the fans.”

LIV stars now have more time to decide

There are still several questions around which players will remain with LIV next season. Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau have not publicly committed to the new version of the league, while Joaquin Niemann recently admitted that he has not made a final decision over his future. Sergio Garcia has also asked the bankruptcy court for clarification over his existing contract as he considers what comes next.

Niemann admitted earlier this week that the financial situation around LIV was not completely unexpected. The Chilean has been one of the best players in the competition since joining in 2022, but he has not ruled out looking at other options.

Cameron Smith has also spoken about frustration over the lack of information given to players during the restructuring process. That has created even more interest around the October 25 deadline, as LIV needs enough players to commit if the BC Partners agreement is going to move forward.

The situation around Rahm and DeChambeau may be quite important. Rahm remains one of the biggest names in the competition, while DeChambeau has built a huge audience outside traditional golf through his YouTube channel and social media. Both have also remained competitive in golf’s biggest tournaments.

There have been reports that Rahm could leave LIV after the 2026 season, although nothing has been confirmed. The Spaniard has previously avoided giving a clear answer about his long-term future, while DeChambeau has also remained quiet about whether he will sign a new agreement.

LIV could look very different in 2027

The next version of LIV is expected to be different from the one fans have watched since the league started in 2022. Reports suggest the 2027 season could feature around 10 tournaments, with approximately half of them played outside the United States. Prize money is also expected to be lower than during LIV’s first few seasons.

That could make decisions more difficult for players who originally joined after receiving big contracts and competing for some of the biggest prize purses in professional golf.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund spent billions of dollars supporting LIV during its first years, but that financial support ended before the restructuring process. LIV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on September 8, with court documents showing liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion.

The new plan is based more around players having ownership rather than simply receiving large guaranteed contracts. LIV CEO Scott O’Neil claimed that the league is trying to become a “player-owned, team-focused, truly global league.”

BC Partners has also made it clear that the players themselves will have an important role if the project continues.

“We are excited about what this next phase can mean for the players who compete in the League,” Goldthorpe said. “We invite those who want to help build a strong, sustainable, team golf league to join us.”

There are also questions about what options LIV players would have if they decide to leave. Some players and their agents have reportedly contacted the PGA Tour and DP World Tour to understand whether a return could be possible, but there is no simple path back at the moment.

Brooks Koepka was previously allowed to return under a special exemption, but PGA Tour officials have indicated that the same route will not automatically be available to others. Players may also have to serve suspensions before returning to regular competition.

October 25 has become one of the most important dates for LIV Golf. Rahm, DeChambeau, Niemann, Garcia and other players now have additional time to decide whether they want to be part of LIV’s new era or look somewhere else for 2027.
