Johnson Wagner has criticised Brandt Snedeker over one of his decisions involving Scottie Scheffler during the Presidents Cup at Medinah.

Wagner questions Scheffler decision

Johnson Wagner did not understand why Scheffler was rested in that particular format. Speaking on CBS Sports, the former PGA Tour winner pointed out that the 30-year-old has many qualities that should work well in alternate shot.

“Scottie Scheffler is the best driver of the golf ball in the world. He’s the best iron player in the world. He’s got one of the best short games in the world, and he’s become a great putter. The fact that you’re going to sit him once is fine. Sit him in best ball, don’t sit him in foursomes! He’s built to play alternate shot. You could pair him with anybody on that team and they would go out and win foursomes. It’s infuriating,” Wagner said.

“The way he handled Jackson Koivun, not putting him out in foursomes was brilliant. Let him go play best ball with Justin Thomas. Why he did that to Jacob Bridgeman, it befuddles me.”

There was also a clear reason behind Snedeker’s choice. Scheffler and Burns had lost to Corey Conners and Nick Taylor in Friday foursomes, which moved Scheffler’s career record in the format across the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup to 1-8-0.

Snedeker explained his thinking shortly after announcing the Saturday afternoon pairings.

“Scottie’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders carrying Team U.S.A. I think it’s time for us to carry him for a session,” Snedeker said.

The American captain also wanted Scheffler fresh for Sunday singles. Burns remained on the course and was paired with Wyndham Clark, while Scheffler watched from the side.

Scottie accepted the decision at the time.

“We’re always prepared for anything,” Scheffler said. “I’ve played a lot of golf this year. I’ll just sit there and cheer the boys on.”

Scheffler helps USA complete comeback

The decision did not prevent Scheffler from finishing the week with a good individual record. He returned on Sunday and defeated Nico Echavarria 2 and 1 in singles.

The American won five holes during the match and built a four-up lead after 10. Echavarria reduced the deficit later, but Scheffler closed the contest on the 17th hole.

There was also one unusual moment on the 14th. A fan shouted during Echavarria’s backswing and the Colombian sent his tee shot well away from the intended line.

Scheffler immediately spoke to the supporter and made it clear he did not agree with what happened. After missing his own birdie putt, the four-time Grand Slam winner then conceded Echavarria’s long par putt.

“There’s no place for that,” Scottie was heard telling the fan.

His point became part of a big Sunday for the United States. Snedeker’s team collected 9.5 of the available 12 singles points and turned a three-point deficit into a 17-13 victory.

Jacob Bridgeman delivered the deciding point by beating Min Woo Lee 1 up. Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scheffler, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Jackson Koivun also won their singles matches.

Scheffler finished the competition with three points from four matches. His only defeat came alongside Burns in Friday foursomes.

The alternate-shot numbers will still create questions before future team events. Scheffler has been the world’s top-ranked golfer and has won almost everything individually, but his foursomes record remains very different from the rest of his career.

Wagner believes the answer is not to remove him from the format. In his opinion, Snedeker could have tried Scheffler alongside another partner and received more information about what works before the next big team competition.

That will matter even more next season.

The United States will travel to Adare Manor in Ireland for the 2027 Ryder Cup, where Jim Furyk will serve as captain. Furyk was also one of Snedeker’s assistants at Medinah and had an opportunity to closely watch how the American pairings worked.

Foursomes have caused problems for the United States in recent team events, so finding the right combinations will be one of the biggest tasks ahead of Ireland.

Fans are already asking what kind of role Scottie Scheffler will have at the Ryder Cup. Looking at his qualities and what he has shown over the last few seasons, the experienced golfer should be one of the main players in this team.
