United States Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk has opened the door for Patrick Reed to return to the American team in 2027, despite the problems between the two men following the 2018 edition of the competition in France.

The 55-year-old captain wants to have the best possible team when the Americans travel to Ireland next year, and the former Masters champion could be one of the candidates for a place.

Reed has not represented his country at the Ryder Cup since 2018, when the United States suffered a heavy 17½-10½ defeat against Europe at Le Golf National. His relationship with Furyk became a big topic after that tournament, mainly because of the decisions involving the American’s playing partners.

However, eight years later, Furyk has made it clear that he is prepared to welcome the 2018 Masters winner back if his results are good enough.

«If Patrick Reed is one of those, that’s great,» Furyk told Telegraph Sport when discussing his plans to select the best 12 American players.

«It’s been a long time since he’s been in our team room and, yeah, you know, Patrick and I will have that conversation. I’m looking forward to welcoming our best team of 12.»

Reed is preparing to return to the PGA Tour for the 2027 season after spending several years competing on LIV Golf. The experienced American announced his plans in January and has since enjoyed a successful campaign on the DP World Tour.

The 36-year-old won the Hero Dubai Desert Classic earlier this year and followed that victory with another title in Qatar. His results have also helped him compete near the top of the Race to Dubai standings.

A return to the PGA Tour would give Reed more opportunities to compete against the best American golfers regularly, something that could help his hopes of returning to the Ryder Cup team.

The former Masters champion has represented the United States at three Ryder Cups, in 2014, 2016 and 2018. He was also part of the American team that defeated Europe at Hazeltine in 2016.

Reed’s relationship with Furyk after the 2018 Ryder Cup

There was a lot of controversy following the American team’s defeat in Paris eight years ago.

Reed had previously enjoyed a great partnership with Jordan Spieth, with the two Americans winning several important matches together in the Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup.

However, Furyk decided to separate them for the 2018 competition, pairing Spieth with Justin Thomas and Reed with Tiger Woods.

The decision did not work particularly well for Reed, as he and Woods lost both of their fourball matches against Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood.

Meanwhile, Spieth and Thomas won three of their four matches together.

After the competition, Reed admitted that he was disappointed with the captain’s decisions, claiming that he had expected to play alongside Spieth.

«The issue’s obviously with Jordan not wanting to play with me,» Reed said at the time.

«I don’t have any issue with Jordan. When it comes right down to it, I don’t care if I like the person I’m paired with or if the person likes me, as long as it works and sets up the team for success. He and I know how to make each other better. We know how to get the job done.»

The American golfer also questioned why Furyk had decided not to use him during two foursomes sessions.

«For somebody as successful in the Ryder Cup as I am, I don’t think it’s smart to sit me twice,» Reed claimed.

The 2018 Masters champion eventually won his singles match against Tyrrell Hatton by 3&2, but that was not enough to prevent Europe from celebrating another victory on home soil.

Furyk later responded to the controversy and explained that he had been responsible for the decision to separate Reed and Spieth.

«Jordan and Patrick have been great in the past. I felt like we had two great pairings out of it. So it was totally my decision and my call,» Furyk said shortly after the tournament.

The former world No. 2 also claimed that Reed and Woods had known about their partnership weeks before arriving in France.

Despite their disagreement, Reed later said that the problems surrounding the 2018 Ryder Cup were behind him and that everyone had moved on.

Furyk wants his players to prepare together for 2027

The American captain is also planning to have his players visit Adare Manor in Ireland before next year’s competition.

Furyk believes it is important that the golfers become familiar with the course and spend time together before facing the European team.

«I expect everyone to make their best effort to be here,» the experienced American said.

«But I do expect a lot of folks to be here and on-site, and I’m looking forward to it. I want them to see the golf course. We had a pretty good turnout back in ’18, as well, for Le Golf National in the summer. But I’m looking for a bigger out-turn this time.»

Furyk was appointed United States captain for the second time earlier this year, having previously led the team in 2018.

The 17-time PGA Tour winner also served as the American Presidents Cup captain in 2024, when his side defeated the International team in Montreal.

Reed, meanwhile, has previously spoken about how much representing his country means to him. The experienced golfer earned the nickname Captain America because of his performances and celebrations during the Ryder Cup.

The 36-year-old was not part of the American teams in 2021, 2023 or 2025, although he continued competing in big tournaments and collected several good results.

His decision to leave LIV Golf and return to traditional tours has given him another opportunity to fight for a Ryder Cup place.

Reed announced in January that he would return to the PGA Tour as a past champion member in 2027. His status could improve depending on his final position in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai rankings.

The United States will travel to Adare Manor for the Ryder Cup from September 17 to 19, 2027, with Furyk hoping to win back the trophy on European soil. Reed will try to earn his place in the American team through his performances during the coming months, while the captain has already confirmed that their past disagreements will not prevent a conversation about his return.
