Charley Hull believes professional golfers should face suspensions of up to one year for slow play, with the 30-year-old Englishwoman calling for much tougher punishments to deal with a problem that has frustrated many players.
The world No. 8 has regularly criticized the amount of time some golfers take to complete their rounds. Hull is known for playing quickly and has previously suggested that players who repeatedly violate time rules should face serious consequences.
Speaking in a recent interview with Golfweek, the nine-time professional winner was asked what she would change about slow play on the LPGA Tour.
«Oh, God, I don’t know. I think you should get banned from the tour for a year or a three-month ban to start off with,» Hull said.
«Because I want to play golf and I’m sure the slow players want to play golf, and if the punishment is strict enough, you’re not gonna play slower. You would make sure you’d play a lot quicker than we do.»
The former Solheim Cup star also believes professional tournaments could become faster if organizers reduced the number of players competing.

When asked what she would change if she became commissioner for one day, Hull suggested smaller fields and fewer players in each group.
«If it was up to me, I’d have a 100-person field every week and cut to 50-55 and playing twosomes on the weekend all the time,» she said.
Slow play has been a subject of criticism for years, with some tournament rounds taking more than five hours to complete.
Hull previously suggested another punishment for slow play
The English golfer made similar comments during the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, when she became frustrated by the time it took to complete a round.
Hull said players who repeatedly received bad timings should eventually lose their tour cards and be forced to return to qualifying school.
«It’s crazy. I’m quite ruthless,» she said.
The 30-year-old suggested that three violations should result in a player losing their tour card, believing that such a punishment would encourage golfers to play faster.
At the same tournament, Hull was also frustrated by the long rounds despite players competing in groups of two.
«We was playing two balls this morning and took us three hours and ten minutes to play nine holes, which is pretty crazy,» the Englishwoman said.
«We play a four-ball at home in like three hours, you know what I mean, with bogeys and stuff. It’s pretty crazy.»
Earlier in September 2026, Hull was again questioned about the issue and admitted that she would introduce much more severe penalties if she had the opportunity.

However, she jokingly acknowledged that her proposed system might also create problems for her.
«I’d make them super severe if it was me, but then you’d probably have nobody playing on the tour, including myself,» Hull said.
«I’d probably get penalized and be banned for, like, six months.»
The LPGA introduced a new pace-of-play policy in March 2025, including changes to how players are timed and punished for taking too long over their shots.
The rules allow officials to issue warnings, fines and stroke penalties depending on the violations.
Ryan Fox and Nelly Korda have also criticized slow play
Hull is not the only professional golfer who has called for changes to the pace of play.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox spoke about the issue ahead of last week’s DP World India Championship.
The 39-year-old admitted that playing slowly can be frustrating for someone who prefers to make decisions quickly.
«I mean, I think pace of play is a tough one, right?» Fox said.
«Like I obviously play fast. I always have. It’s kind of frustrating when it’s slow, but I also understand the fact that most of the time we’re playing for a lot every week in terms of ranking points and money and everything else that comes with a golf tournament.»
Fox explained that players should already be preparing their next shots while waiting for their turn.
«It’s not that difficult to pick a shot and pick a club,» the New Zealander previously said.
«I get in there, and it all happens quick.»
Nelly Korda has also expressed frustration with slow rounds on the LPGA Tour.

During the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the American spent approximately six hours completing her third round alongside Brooke Henderson.
«I think we played a two ball in like six hours. That’s just a little ridiculous, but what can you do?» Korda said.
«Just told myself to be patient.»
The former world No. 1 also mentioned spectators when discussing the issue.
«I think at the end of the day, the Rules of Golf are the Rules of Golf and they should be enforced,» Korda said.
«I think it should be monitored. I mean, if I’m being honest, if I was a spectator and I was out here for five-and-a-half hours to six hours, you know, it’s tough to watch.»
