The arrival of LIV Golf created a lot of turbulence in the sport several years ago.

Many people were skeptical about the future of golf, asking whether the sport would become more focused on money rather than prestige and tradition.

Several important names and legends of the game decided to join the controversial league, with many critics believing that those moves damaged what they had previously built during their careers. One of those names was Greg Norman, who has been a big target of criticism for years because of his role in LIV Golf.

Greg Norman has spoken about one of the things he believes LIV Golf got wrong from the beginning, only days after the league entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The Australian, who served as LIV Golf CEO and commissioner before leaving his position, said the competition became too focused on the United States. Norman explained that his original idea was to build a more global schedule and leave most of the American market to the PGA Tour.

“It was too US-centric from the start,” Norman told Flushing It’s Tom Hobbs.

The 71-year-old stressed that he never wanted LIV Golf to destroy the PGA Tour, despite the long conflict between the two sides since the breakaway league started in 2022.

“I never wanted to destroy the PGA Tour,” Norman said.

“I thought, let’s own global golf and let the PGA Tour have the US.”

Norman claimed his preferred model would have included around 10 tournaments outside the United States and only four events in America. He believes that type of calendar could have made LIV Golf look very different and perhaps reduced some of the direct competition with the PGA Tour.

The former world No. 1 also said he believed LIV Golf could have worked alongside established tours instead of spending years in a battle with them.

“We had everything. It was plug and play,” Norman said.

He argued that LIV players could have appeared in weaker tournaments on other tours and helped create more interest around those events. Norman believes there was a chance for cooperation, but that never really developed.

The Australian was also critical of former PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. According to Norman, Monahan and Saudi Public Investment Fund governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan should have spoken much earlier.

“Unfortunately, Monahan was too dug in and was given bad advice,” Norman said.

“He should have spoken to Yasir and myself. I’m an honorary member of the PGA Tour and just wanted to see the game of golf grow.

Yasir always wanted to work with them and we never wanted to destroy the PGA Tour or the DP World Tour. It was a tremendous opportunity but Monahan was too dug in.”

Norman still believes LIV changed professional golf in some ways. He mentioned bigger prize money and changes to the PGA Tour product as two examples.

“I would love a PGA Tour player to admit they’ve made more money, and that the production is now better. We created that. We forced the change,” he said.

LIV attracted many famous names after its launch, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and later Jon Rahm. The league also introduced team competition, shotgun starts and shorter events as part of its different format.

LIV Golf begins restructuring after Chapter 11 filing

LIV Golf filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New Jersey on September 8. Court documents showed assets between $100 million and $500 million, while liabilities were listed between $500 million and $1 billion.

Several top players were also listed among creditors. Jon Rahm is owed around $7.5 million, Bryson DeChambeau around $5.7 million and Dustin Johnson around $5.5 million.

The league has stressed that Chapter 11 does not mean it is shutting down. Instead, LIV is trying to restructure its business and return with a different model in 2027.

A bankruptcy court has already given LIV interim approval to access $14 million in financing that can be used to continue operations, including paying employees and certain vendors.

CEO Scott O’Neil has said the plan is to create a more sustainable league, with players expected to have a much bigger ownership role if the restructuring is completed.

This situation has worried many important LIV Golf members, as well as some of those who were previously part of the controversial league. At this point, it seems important to find a quick solution while also trying to keep some of the top names.

Norman said he was not surprised by the financial problems.

“I think everyone could see it coming,” he said.

The former LIV boss left the organization after his contract ended in September 2025. He revealed that he has had limited contact with O’Neil since then, but still believes the league was in a good position when he departed.

Another idea Norman wanted to develop was national ownership of LIV teams. He suggested that golf organizations from different countries could eventually operate teams connected with those markets.

Despite everything that has happened, including the bankruptcy filing, Norman does not appear to regret taking the job.

“Very proud,” he said when asked how he looks at his LIV Golf legacy.
