Brandt Snedeker thanked Donald Trump and had some big words for Jackson Koivun after the United States completed a great comeback to win the Presidents Cup at Medinah.

Things did not look too good for the Americans before Sunday’s singles, as the International Team had played better golf over the opening three days and entered the final session with a three-point advantage.

However, Sunday brought a completely different situation. The Americans won the singles session 9.5-2.5 and finished the competition with a 17-13 victory, continuing their long run of success in the Presidents Cup. Donald Trump was also at Medinah on Sunday, and the US president, who served as honorary chairman of the competition, spoke on the first tee before the singles matches started.

Snedeker later joked that Trump deserved some credit after the result.

“I think these guys never lost faith. I know what that team room is like. I told the guys last night that funny stuff happens here. Medinah has a history of funny things happening. Sure enough, they went out and played their **** off today. I’m so proud of those guys,” Snedeker said.

The 45-year-old had already experienced a very different Sunday at Medinah. He was part of the American Ryder Cup team which lost at the same venue in 2012 after Europe produced a famous comeback, but this time Snedeker was watching his own players create something similar.

Trump received a loud reaction when he arrived at Medinah, but his speech before the start of play was quite short. He told the crowd that they wanted to see golf and then allowed the attention to return to the players.

Snedeker had already spoken about the atmosphere earlier in the day and said it was “pretty electric” to have the president at the course. After the Americans completed the comeback, the former FedEx Cup champion returned to the subject and thanked Trump directly.

“And one last shout out to Donald Trump, President Trump. He told me I was going to bring some energy today for you guys, you guys need it, and I told him if we did this, he gets all the credit. Thank you, President Trump,” Snedeker said.

The United States did not need much time to start changing the situation. Snedeker put many of his experienced names near the top of the lineup, including Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler, and the home team quickly started collecting points.

Several players later in the lineup continued the work before Jacob Bridgeman secured the result for the Americans with his match against Min Woo Lee. It was also the 11th consecutive Presidents Cup victory for the United States, extending a run which has lasted for more than two decades.

Jackson Koivun gets praise from his captain

One of Snedeker’s most interesting decisions came further down the singles lineup, where he placed 21-year-old Jackson Koivun against Si Woo Kim. The South Korean had been one of the International Team’s better players during the week and went 2-up through 10 holes, but the young American managed to change the match.

Koivun won four of the next five holes and later arrived at the 18th with a one-hole advantage. His approach on the final hole finished close to the pin, while Kim was unable to extend the match.

“I cannot get over what Jackson Koivun did today. I put him in a really tough spot out there. We thought he could handle it. Sure enough, he did. He went out there and looked like the stud we know he’s going to be,” Snedeker said.

The captain later gave even more praise to the youngster, who finished his first Presidents Cup without losing a match.

“The kid is special. He’s different. You saw that for a 21-year-old kid to stand up there and hit those last two balls like he did, not many people like that. I’ve got a team full of them over there but they’re very rare to find,” he added.

Koivun finished the week with a 2-0-1 record and was the only American player who did not lose a match. The rookie admitted afterward that everything had happened much quicker than he expected since turning professional, while Justin Thomas also praised the young player and described him as very mature.

Snedeker had faced many questions during the first three days, quite after several of his pairings did not bring the results he wanted. He also admitted before Sunday that he had not always been clear enough with his players, but the final day changed the entire picture.

The United States produced the biggest Sunday comeback in Presidents Cup history, while Snedeker finished his first event as captain by lifting the trophy at a course where he experienced one of the most difficult team defeats of his own playing career.
