Donald Trump’s visit to the Presidents Cup on Sunday could include more than watching golf and appearing at the trophy ceremony.

The U.S. President is expected at Medinah Country Club for the final day between Brandt Snedeker’s United States team and Geoff Ogilvy’s International team.

According to a Golfweek report cited by several golf outlets, Trump has requested around 15 minutes to speak from the first tee before the Sunday singles start.

The PGA Tour had not officially confirmed that the speech would happen when the report appeared.

Sunday’s singles are scheduled to start at 11:02 a.m. local time and continue until the final match begins at 1:19 p.m. Closing ceremonies are planned after the last putt.

Trump’s presence at Medinah was already expected after he accepted the role of Honorary Chairman of the 2026 Presidents Cup in August.

This is also not his first time in that position.

Trump previously had the same role

Trump was Honorary Chairman when the Presidents Cup was played at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey in 2017.

He appeared during the Sunday trophy ceremony on that occasion.

The 2026 event makes him the second U.S. president after Barack Obama to serve as Honorary Chairman twice.

Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama and Joe Biden are among the American presidents who previously had the role.

Leaders from other countries have also been involved, including Justin Trudeau, Scott Morrison and Julia Gillard.

Trump spoke about the Presidents Cup when his appointment was announced in August.

«This will be a particularly exciting event. Both teams are ‘loaded’ with Talent. I look forward to being there, and greeting all of these fantastic athletes, on both teams!» Trump said.

The Presidents Cup brings together 12 American golfers and 12 International players from outside Europe.

The United States entered the 2026 event after winning 13 of the previous 15 editions. The International team’s only victory came in Melbourne in 1998, while the 2003 event ended in a 17-17 tie.

Medinah is hosting the competition for the first time. The Chicago course has previously hosted the Ryder Cup, PGA Championships and U.S. Opens.

Clark welcomes Trump’s visit

Wyndham Clark was among the American players who spoke positively about Trump attending the tournament.

The two-time U.S. Open champion said it would be an unusual experience to have the U.S. President watching him and his teammates compete.

«Being an American and having the President of the United States coming to watch you play golf is something that as a kid you don’t ever imagine or fathom happening,» Clark said.

The 32-year-old is making his second Presidents Cup appearance after also representing the United States in Montreal in 2024.

Clark entered Medinah after a successful 2026 season which included three PGA Tour victories and his second U.S. Open title. He is one of six automatic qualifiers on Snedeker’s team.

Trump has attended other big golf team competitions as well.

He was present at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black and will now have another chance to watch a U.S. golf team in person.

His official role at Medinah is already clear, but there is still a question over whether the reported speech from the first tee will become part of Sunday’s program.

The PGA Tour’s official schedule lists the singles and closing ceremony but does not list a 15-minute presidential speech.

The final day will decide whether the United States keeps the Presidents Cup or whether Ogilvy’s International team can end a very long wait for another victory.

Golf remains important to Trump

Golf has been an important part of Trump’s life for many years and his interest in the sport has continued during his second presidential term.

The U.S. President owns several golf courses and regularly plays the sport himself. Forbes reported earlier in September that Trump had spent more than 1,400 hours at his golf courses during the first 600 days of his second term. Those visits do not always mean that he was playing, as meetings and other activities can also take place at the clubs.

His time around golf has also brought criticism in the United States. Some media outlets and political critics have questioned how often the President visits golf properties while dealing with political issues at home and abroad.

The U.S. President does not seem too worried about the criticism which continues to follow him. His passion for golf has always been there, and Trump regularly uses his free time to visit golf courses, whether that means attending big tournaments or simply playing the game himself.
