The DP World Tour is nearing the end of its season, stopping in India for the fourth-to-last tournament on the calendar.
While European Tour players are focused on the finale in Dubai, several of their peers must decide which path to take for their futures.
Naturally, I am referring to the LIV players, who must decide whether to join the project led by Scott O’Neil and BC Partners—the financial advisor backing the operation—thereby moving on from the ruins of LIV Golf 1.0 to help build LIV Golf 2.0.
DP and Liv
It is now clear that a significant number of LIV 1.0’s top players will not be joining the new project.
Sergio Garcia, Jon Rahm, David Puig, and Adrian Meronk have officially made their choice, while others have already expressed their intention to do so (Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann, to name just two).
So far, Richard Bland, Victor Perez, and Cameron Tringale have climbed aboard O’Neil’s bandwagon, having completed their analysis and made their decisions.
And the others?
Players who have been weighing their options for the past few days now have a new factor to plug into their decision-making process.
According to BBC Sport, DP World Tour CEO Guy Kinnings has made his stance clear and unequivocal:
“Players have to make a choice.”
“We have rules and regulations in place to protect our tour, and our members must abide by them.”
“Players who do not wish to observe our rules and regulations should not seek to join our tour.”
We are witnessing a distinct shift in approach from the DPWT, which until now had maintained a softer stance compared to the PGA Tour’s uncompromising position. Consequently, the system of fines and suspensions resulting from the 2023 arbitration ruling is now being scrapped; this will have an inevitable and virtually immediate impact on all those who had settled their status in order to compete on the DPWT (such as Tyrrell Hatton).
A statement by Paul McGinley (posted on X) regarding Guy Kinnings’ remarks offers an interesting perspective:
“The DP World Tour has lost tens of millions directly to LIV in terms of sponsors, tournaments, and venues.”
“It also has the right to be a business competitor, just as the PGAT and LIV have done.”
