Jackson Koivun has enjoyed a great start to his professional golf career, and Trey Wingo believes the 21-year-old has something that made Tiger Woods different from many other players during his early years on the PGA Tour.
The young American won his first PGA Tour title at the 3M Open in July, defeating world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three shots. He then helped the United States win the Presidents Cup in September, finishing the competition unbeaten.
Wingo, who has followed Koivun’s progress, thinks that winning at such a young age is not something that can be explained only by talent.
Speaking on Trey Wingo Golf, the broadcaster claimed that Koivun has already learned how to win tournaments, which was also one of Woods’ best qualities.
«What I’m saying is there’s playing well, and there’s having a gorgeous swing, and then there’s winning, and that’s a different skill set,» Wingo said.
The golf analyst pointed out that many talented players spend years on the PGA Tour without being able to win regularly. He believes Koivun is already quite different in that aspect.
«But at some point you have to learn how to win. And you know that was Tiger’s greatest skill when he jumped from his amateur career and Stanford career to the PGA Tour.
«He had already developed the skill set to win, and Jackson is following in those footsteps for me, and that’s why I put him where he was, because it’s not just about the talent.»

Wingo also mentioned Justin Thomas, who has spoken positively about the youngster despite their college rivalry. Thomas attended Alabama, while Koivun played for Auburn.
The broadcaster believes that Koivun possesses the right mentality to deal with difficult situations, something that other young golfers may need more time to develop.
«He’s that good, and he has that mindset, that sort of missing DNA piece that we talk about,» Wingo added.
Koivun showed his mentality against Scheffler
Koivun’s first PGA Tour victory provided an opportunity to see how the youngster would perform while being chased by one of the world’s best golfers.
At the 3M Open, the American held a three-shot lead after the third round, having recorded a 10-under 61 on Saturday.
However, Scheffler made a big effort during the final round, shooting a 63 and putting some pressure on the 21-year-old.
Koivun managed to finish with a bogey-free 66, winning the tournament with a record score of 25-under 259.
Following the victory, the former Auburn player admitted that he had heard spectators talking about Scheffler’s progress throughout his final round.
«All throughout the crowd I kept hearing, ‘Scottie’s coming, Scottie’s coming,'» Koivun said.
«I just tried to tune that out and keep playing the golf I knew I could.»

The youngster also said that he was quite nervous on the final hole but managed to produce some good shots when he needed them.
Auburn coach Nick Clinard was delighted with the result and praised his former player’s approach to competition.
«He wants to be the best player in the world and this is a step in that direction. His mindset and mentality will continue to set him apart from other players,» Clinard said.
Koivun later received another opportunity to compete under pressure when he was selected for the United States Presidents Cup team.
The Americans were trailing by three points before the final day’s singles matches, but they managed to recover and defeat the International Team 17-13.
Koivun defeated Si Woo Kim in his singles match and finished the competition without losing a match.
US captain Brandt Snedeker also praised the youngster after the victory, admitting that he had placed him in a difficult position.
«The kid is special. He’s different. For a 21-year-old kid to stand up there and hit those last two balls like he did, not many people like that,» Snedeker said.
Tiger Woods previously spoke about his college regret
Koivun decided to stay at Auburn for another season despite already being in a position to pursue a professional career.
The 21-year-old wanted more time to develop before joining the PGA Tour, and he continued to collect individual awards during his college career.
Woods made a different decision when he was a young golfer.
The 15-time major champion attended Stanford University for two years before turning professional in 1996. His decision was followed by many victories, including the 1997 Masters, which he won by 12 shots.
However, Woods later admitted that leaving college earlier than he wanted was one of his biggest regrets.
In a 2016 interview with Charlie Rose, the former world No. 1 said he wished he had spent another year at Stanford.

The American explained that becoming famous at such a young age brought many obligations and changed his everyday life.
Woods won 82 PGA Tour titles during his career, while Koivun is only beginning his journey in professional golf.
The youngster’s next big goal will be to compete regularly against the world’s best players and eventually challenge for his first major championship.
After winning his first PGA Tour event and helping the United States at the Presidents Cup, Koivun will look to continue his progress during the remainder of 2026.
