Rather than erasing this history, Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw chose to fully integrate it into their design.

The result promises an experience distinct from that of Pinehurst’s other courses. Coore himself describes the site as «weirdly wonderful,» highlighting its mysterious character and unusual landforms. The holes weave through trees and undulating terrain—with greens sometimes hidden from view—before revealing fresh perspectives around the bend.

For Coore and Crenshaw, No. 11 also marks a new milestone in a five-decade relationship with Pinehurst. The two architects have been visiting the site since the 1970s and were notably behind the iconic restoration of No. 2, completed in 2011. However, No. 11 represents a first: it is their debut original design at Pinehurst, rather than a restoration of an existing course. The new course complements the development of Pinehurst Sandmines, which is already home to No. 10—designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2024. Although the two courses occupy nearby land, they possess distinct identities.
