Jordan Spieth has spent the last few seasons trying to find the consistency that once made him one of the biggest names on the PGA Tour.
The American has shown flashes of his old level, but the results have not followed often enough and 2026 became another difficult year.
Spieth finished the season without a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour and was unable to get beyond the first FedEx Cup playoff event. At 33, he is also more than four years removed from his last victory and nine years on from the most recent of his three major titles.
Still, Smylie Kaufman does not believe the situation is hopeless. The former PGA Tour winner thinks Spieth has a game without one obvious weakness and even used Scottie Scheffler as part of the comparison when explaining why 2027 could become such an important year.

Smylie Kaufman sees Scottie Scheffler qualities in Jordan Spieth
Speaking on The Smylie Show, Kaufman suggested that the last three seasons have offered a clear picture of where Spieth currently stands. He feels the Texan can produce good numbers, but has struggled to put four complete rounds together often enough to turn those performances into the finishes he wants.
“I think we’ve got a sample size of the last three years of, okay this is kind of who he is right now in the game of golf, which is a player who is fully capable of having good stats but not necessarily getting the results,” Kaufman said.

He added that 2027 may become a “put up or shut up year” for Spieth, with the former world No. 1 needing to prove that he can be more than a player who gives himself three good days before one poor round takes him out of contention.
Kaufman also pointed to Spieth’s desire to return to American team golf. The 13-time PGA Tour winner has not represented the United States since the 2023 Ryder Cup, and Kaufman believes missing those events hurts a player who has enjoyed memorable moments in team formats.
“It’s a huge year for him in the fact that he’s already starting from behind the eight ball, being 52nd, in the signature events, just outside,” Kaufman said, before noting that Spieth may again need to play his way into some bigger tournaments or rely on sponsor invitations early in the season.
The most interesting part of Kaufman’s comments came when he compared the shape of Spieth’s game with Scheffler’s.
“When you look at his stat profile, he’s got a pentagon, it’s just not wide enough. He’s got all the things that Scottie has, but Scottie’s is so wide in each category. Not many guys have that. He really doesn’t show any weaknesses.”
Spieth still believes his best golf can return
The numbers explain why Kaufman stopped short of suggesting Spieth is currently close to Scheffler’s level. Scheffler finished inside the top eight in every strokes gained category in 2026, while Spieth ranked 40th in putting and outside the top 70 in off the tee, approach and around the green.
Spieth was 47th in strokes gained total, showing the gap between the two Americans. However, Kaufman’s point is that there is no single area that looks completely broken. Instead, Spieth needs to raise several parts of his game and reduce the poor rounds that have repeatedly damaged otherwise encouraging weeks.
There is also no suggestion from Spieth that he believes his best days are definitely behind him. Before The Open at Royal Birkdale in July, the three-time major champion admitted that the results had been difficult to accept because he felt his golf was better than the finishes suggested.
“I’m quite frustrated with the results considering I know where my game is at,” Spieth said. “It’s better than it was four or five years ago when I got back to top 10 in the world. It’s without a doubt better than it was then; it’s just not quite showing up in results.”

That comment looks even more interesting after another season without a victory. Spieth has dealt with a troublesome left wrist and underwent surgery after the 2024 season, but there were no signs in 2026 that the injury alone explained why he was unable to contend more regularly.
The challenge in 2027 is simple to describe, even if it will be harder to solve. Spieth has to turn good stretches into complete tournaments, improve across several statistical areas and begin moving back toward the places where he once seemed a regular every Sunday.
With his FedEx Cup position leaving him outside some of the most comfortable routes into the biggest PGA Tour events, Spieth may have to earn his way back quickly when the new season begins. Kaufman believes the tools are still there; 2027 will show whether Spieth can finally make them work together again.
