Dustin Johnson has been part of LIV Golf since its first season, but the situation around the league looks very different now compared with when he made the move from the PGA Tour in 2022.

LIV is going through an uncertain period after the Saudi Public Investment Fund decided to stop backing the league beyond 2026. The Team Championship was also canceled, while CEO Scott O’Neil has been working on a new investment deal that could decide what the competition looks like from next season.

That has naturally created questions around the players as well. Johnson is one of LIV’s biggest names and captains 4Aces GC. LIV announced a multi-year extension with the American earlier this year, but even Johnson has admitted that he does not know exactly what the league will look like in 2027.

The two-time major champion was recently asked about a meeting with a new investor at LIV Indianapolis. Johnson was not at the meeting, but he said the information he received afterwards was positive.

Johnson says LIV Golf is moving in the right direction

“Unfortunately, I was not there. I flew up yesterday afternoon, and I was out practising,” Johnson said.

“I mean, from what I know, it’s going great.

I think there’s a lot of things, but, you know, I think it’s moving in the right direction.

I haven’t seen a whole lot, so I’m worried about this week, and then next week, we’ll get into those details, but for right now, I mean, from everything I’ve heard, it’s going really well.”

Those comments sound more optimistic than some of Johnson’s answers earlier this year. In May, when he was asked where he expected to be in 2027, the American admitted that he had no clear answer.

“I think Scott’s doing a good job. I think your guess is as good as mine with what happens next year,” he said at the PGA Championship.

Johnson also missed a players-only meeting earlier in August and said at the time that he was prepared to simply see how the situation developed.

For now, his attention remains on golf. Johnson said his swing has started to feel better after an inconsistent season and believes there is still a lot of good golf left in him.

“It actually feels pretty good,” he said of his game.

“I got a little bit of practice in during the off-week last week, and yeah, I mean, the swing’s feeling nice, actually. Probably the best it has felt, you know, for a while.

It’s just starting to come around. I still feel like I have a lot of game, so, you know, I’ve just got to put it all together.”

Johnson still believes he can compete in majors

One of the biggest changes for Johnson since joining LIV has been his route into major championships. Some of his old exemptions have started to disappear, and this year he needed other ways to keep his long major streak alive.

Johnson received a special invitation to the PGA Championship and said at the time that he still believed he could compete with the best players in the world.

“I still feel like I’m one of the best players in the world,” he said.

He also made the cut at the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open this season, but his long run of consecutive major appearances ended when he did not play at the Open Championship.

Johnson had considered trying to qualify, but eventually decided against making the trip.

“It was just a lot to travel,” he explained.

“To go over there, you know, for one day, especially just in the time frame it was. I mean obviously I love the Open Championship. I wish I would have been playing, but, yeah, just didn’t work out.

I thought about it, I was going to do it, but it was just a lot just to go over for a day. It was not a big deal.

Hopefully I’ll be back for St. Andrews.”

That final line shows Johnson has not lost interest in major golf. Earlier in the season, he also said his game was finally getting into a position where he felt he could contend again and made it clear that another major remains one of his goals.

At 42, Johnson is no longer the dominant player who reached world No. 1 and won the 2016 US Open and 2020 Masters. He still believes there is enough left in his game to challenge on big stages.

More details about LIV’s next version are expected after Indianapolis. For Johnson, the more immediate target is simple: improve the consistency of his game and put himself in position to return to the Open at St Andrews next year.
