Tyrrell Hatton was one of the bigger names to join LIV Golf when he made the move at the start of 2024.

The Englishman joined Jon Rahm’s new Legion XIII team after spending years on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. At the time, Hatton admitted that leaving was not an easy decision, especially because he still had ambitions of playing Ryder Cups and competing in majors.

Rahm played a big role in changing his mind. The pair already knew each other well and had enjoyed success together at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome.

“The team aspect played a big part, and being with Jon as well was a huge draw,” Hatton later said. “I like the schedule, traveling around the world and playing in different places.”

Money was obviously part of the LIV offer, although Hatton said it was not the only thing that convinced him.

“Everyone knows that side of it. Yeah, it’s nice but ultimately it’s not everything,” he said at the time.

More than two years later, his feelings about LIV may have changed. Reports now suggest Hatton is ready to leave when the 2026 season ends, and he appears to have made a joke about it in front of LIV itself.

Hatton chooses ‘I Want to Break Free’ at LIV finale

Hatton was playing at LIV Golf Indianapolis when players were given walk-out music at the party hole.

His choice was difficult to ignore.

The 34-year-old walked out to Queen’s famous song “I Want to Break Free,” just as speculation about his LIV future was growing.

Flushing It reported that the choice was intentional. According to the report, Hatton later spoke about it with other players in the locker room.

Sources cited by the account also expect him to leave LIV after this season and play a full DP World Tour schedule in 2027.

Other reports from Indianapolis told a similar story. PJ Clark and Joseph LaMagna said Hatton had made it clear to other players that the song was linked to his wish to leave the league.

His Legion XIII teammate Tom McKibbin also made an interesting choice, walking out to “Breaking Free” from High School Musical.

Hatton’s situation is especially interesting because he already has a route to continue playing on the DP World Tour.

Earlier this year, he was one of eight LIV members who reached an agreement with the European circuit. Hatton agreed to pay outstanding fines, play additional DP World Tour events and withdraw pending appeals in exchange for conditional releases during the 2026 season.

It means a full return to the DP World Tour in 2027 would probably be much easier for him than trying to immediately get back onto the PGA Tour.

Leaving LIV does not guarantee a PGA Tour return

Hatton is not the only LIV player whose future is being questioned.

Jon Rahm is also reportedly expected to leave after the season, which would mean Legion XIII could lose both its captain and one of its biggest players. LIV is also preparing for life without Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund as its main financial backer and is looking for new investment.

Representatives for several LIV players have already contacted the PGA Tour about possible returns, according to Golf Digest. The problem is that coming back may now be much more difficult than it was earlier this year.

Brooks Koepka returned through the PGA Tour’s special Returning Member Program. He accepted financial penalties, including giving up possible equity earnings for five years.

That program was only open for a short period. Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Smith were also eligible, but none accepted the offer before the February 2 deadline. The PGA Tour made clear at the time that the program was a one-time opportunity.

Patrick Reed has taken another route. He left LIV and focused on the DP World Tour, with plans to regain PGA Tour membership for 2027. His situation is different because he resigned his PGA Tour membership before playing unauthorized events.

Rory McIlroy has already warned that other LIV players should not expect an easy return. He said this week that it could be a “tough road back” and suggested any future deal would probably be less favorable than the one Koepka received.

For Hatton, the DP World Tour therefore looks like the more obvious destination if the reports are correct.

He joined LIV because he liked the team idea, wanted to play alongside Rahm and enjoyed the schedule. Now, both men could be preparing to leave.

Hatton has not officially announced anything. His walk-out song certainly gave people something to talk about, and if the reports from inside the locker room are accurate, the joke was not accidental.
