“When I talk about competitive instincts and talk about intensity each week, that’s stuff that I learned just by watching Tiger,” Scheffler said.

“I’ve only played with him once in competition. It was at the Masters; I think it was the COVID year.”

Scottie was grouped with Woods and Shane Lowry during the final round at Augusta National. None of them had a realistic chance to win the tournament because Dustin Johnson was far ahead.

Because of this, the American was interested to see how Tiger would approach the round when there was not much to play for.

Scheffler could not believe Woods’ intensity

Woods had already won the Masters five times at that moment. He was also far away from the leaders.

Scheffler maybe expected a more relaxed Tiger.

He quickly understood that this would not happen.

“We’re in 20th place. He doesn’t have a ton to play for. He’s won like five green jackets, and we don’t have a chance of winning,” Scheffler continued.

“I just remember walking up onto the first green and watching him read his putt, and I was like, holy smokes, this guy is into it.”

Woods later made a 10 on the par-three 12th hole, which was one of the worst scores of his career on one hole. However, he responded by making birdies on five of his final six holes.

For Scheffler, this showed the mentality that made Woods different from many other golfers.

“That’s the intensity he brought into each and every shot, and that’s something I’ve tried to model in my game,” the four-time major winner pointed out.

“I’ve learned a lot by watching him play. He’s had tremendous impacts on the game, and that’s one of them.”

An experienced golfer is also an interesting character.

Even when he is not playing his best golf, the American usually finds a way to stay in tournaments. His consistency over the last few years is one of the main reasons why comparisons with Woods continue to appear.

Still, Scheffler has several times stressed that comparing him with Tiger is not really fair.

Scheffler does not see money record as passing Woods

There is another Woods record which Scheffler is very close to passing. The world No. 1 is close to going ahead of Woods on the PGA Tour career money list.

However, Scheffler does not think this can really be considered as breaking one of Tiger’s records.

Prize money in professional golf is much bigger today compared to the period when Woods was dominating the sport.

“I mean, you’re kind of comparing apples and oranges,” Scheffler said.

The 30-year-old stressed that Woods himself is one of the reasons why current players can compete for so much money.

“The reason our purses are so large today is because of the influence and impact that Tiger had on the game,” Scottie said.

Scheffler pointed out that because of this he would not look at passing Woods on the money list as some big personal achievement over the legendary golfer.

“I wouldn’t really consider that a Tiger record being broken,” he said.

“I think it just shows one of the many effects he had on the game of golf in a positive way.”

Tiger Woods is a golfer who became an inspiration to many with his incredible journey and rich career. Scheffler, just like most of his rivals, followed Tiger’s example, and it seems that Scott could use his qualities to rise to the top and in a few years enter the debate about the greatest golfer of all time.
