Bryson DeChambeau’s future with LIV Golf remains uncertain, and the latest development involving his lawyers has created more questions about whether the two-time US Open champion will continue playing in the league next year.
The 33-year-old American has been one of LIV Golf’s most recognizable players since joining the Saudi-backed competition in 2022. However, with the league preparing for a different format in 2027, DeChambeau has yet to make a final decision.
Things became more interesting this week after Sergio Garcia received permission to leave his existing LIV Golf contract. The Spaniard’s request was approved by the bankruptcy court, allowing him to consider other opportunities for next season.
Soon after that decision, lawyers representing several LIV golfers, including DeChambeau, wanted to know whether the same situation could apply to their clients.
Other names involved included Cameron Smith, Byeong Hun An, Marc Leishman, Cameron Tringale, Matthew Wolff and Harold Varner III.
The situation has become quite complicated because LIV Golf is trying to restructure its business after the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund decided to stop financing the competition in its previous form.
The league filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September and has been working on plans to return in 2027 with new investors.

DeChambeau’s lawyers want answers about his contract
DeChambeau is not the only player who wants more information about his future obligations.
Garcia’s successful request has raised questions about what other golfers can do with their existing agreements. The former Masters champion wanted to make sure he was free to speak with other tournaments and potential sponsors without restrictions from his previous LIV contract.
Cameron Smith’s attorney, Michael Cooley, also addressed the matter, stressing that rejecting the existing agreements should allow players to negotiate with other organizations.
«I believe that rejection of the contracts would inherently accomplish precisely that, and that post-rejection, my clients and other players should be free to engage in those discussions of future plans with third parties,» Cooley said.
Meanwhile, another development has brought DeChambeau’s situation into greater focus.
Lawyers representing the American are reportedly helping organize a committee involving LIV players. Such a group would allow golfers to work together while negotiating with the league and its potential investors.
There are several things that players want to understand before signing new agreements, including the financial terms, ownership opportunities and freedom to compete elsewhere.

LIV Golf is looking for a way to continue operating with the help of BC Partners. The investment firm has proposed financing that could reach $300 million, depending on court approval and other conditions.
The new competition, referred to as LIV 2.0, is expected to have a different business model, with golfers receiving ownership stakes in the league and its teams.
DeChambeau’s decision will be important because the American has attracted a lot of attention both on the golf course and through his YouTube channel.
The two-time US Open winner has not publicly announced that he is leaving LIV Golf. Asking lawyers to examine the agreement also does not necessarily mean that he has decided against participating in the new competition.
Jon Rahm has already decided against LIV 2.0
While DeChambeau is yet to announce his plans, Jon Rahm has already made his position clear.
The Spanish golfer will not participate in the new version of LIV Golf after reviewing the proposed conditions.
His attorney, John Beck, confirmed that decision during a bankruptcy court hearing on October 7.
«Rahm has independently reviewed the proposed terms of LIV 2.0, as the parties have been referring to it, and has determined that those terms are unacceptable as to him, and he will not be participating going forward in LIV 2.0,» Beck said.
Rahm joined LIV Golf before the 2024 season after signing a contract reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
The former world No. 1 went on to win three consecutive individual season titles, but his future will now be away from the restructured league.
Garcia’s situation is somewhat different. Although the 46-year-old has received permission to leave his existing contract, he has not completely ruled out the possibility of signing another agreement with LIV Golf.
The Spanish veteran is also interested in returning to the European Ryder Cup team in 2027. He has spoken about wanting to play at Adare Manor in Ireland, where Europe will try to win another Ryder Cup.
As for DeChambeau, he previously admitted that he was still considering his options.
According to reports in late September, the American had been going back and forth over whether he should continue with LIV Golf.

He joined the competition in 2022 and became captain of Crushers GC, leading the team to the championship in 2023.
The American also enjoyed success in the biggest golf tournaments, winning his second US Open title at Pinehurst in 2024 after previously taking the trophy at Winged Foot in 2020.
His YouTube channel has also become an important part of his career, attracting millions of viewers through golf challenges and appearances alongside other famous athletes and celebrities.
LIV Golf is hoping to return next year with a shorter schedule and a new financial structure. The proposed plans include ten tournaments, five of them outside the United States.
The next bankruptcy court hearing is expected on October 14, when more information about player contracts could become available.
DeChambeau has not announced where he will play in 2027, and his next move will depend on what he decides about the new LIV Golf proposal.
