However, there is another side of the discussion. Rory has not won as often as Scheffler this season, but his only PGA Tour victory of 2026 came at the Masters, where he successfully defended his title.

Shipnuck believes McIlroy has created some distance

Golf writer Alan Shipnuck discussed both players on the Indo Sport Podcast and explained why he believes McIlroy still has an advantage over Scheffler in one important area.

Shipnuck admitted that Scheffler’s week-to-week level is difficult to criticize, even though the American did not win a major championship this year.

“Different players assign a different value to the majors.

Certainly Scheffler cares deeply, but his north star is playing his best in every round of every tournament, and he really accomplished that this year.”

Shipnuck later compared their careers and pointed to McIlroy’s recent success at Augusta.

“Clearly, he’s the best player in the world, but Rory’s put a little daylight between himself and Scottie with the back-to-back Masters, something that Scheffler’s never done.

You know, Rory has six majors to Scottie’s four. Scheffler was creeping up very quickly on him.”

McIlroy became only the fourth player in Masters history to successfully defend the title, joining Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods. His 2026 victory also came after he held the biggest 36-hole lead in Masters history before eventually surviving a close final day.

Scheffler was the player who came closest to stopping him. After opening with rounds of 70 and 74, the American moved back into contention with a 65 on Saturday and finished with a 68, but McIlroy stayed one shot ahead.

Scheffler still had the better PGA Tour season

There is no doubt that Scheffler produced more consistent results during the entire PGA Tour season.

He started 2026 by winning The American Express and later dominated the FedEx St. Jude Championship by eight shots. He then added the Tour Championship and FedExCup to finish the season with three victories.

The FedEx St. Jude win was his 21st PGA Tour title, while his Tour Championship victory moved him to 22. Scheffler also became the third-youngest golfer since 1970 to reach 21 PGA Tour wins, behind only Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

McIlroy’s PGA Tour season was very different. After defending his Masters title, he finished tied seventh at the PGA Championship, tied 32nd at the US Open and tied 40th at The Open. He later finished third at the BMW Championship.

That is why comparing the two players is not simple. Scheffler has been much more consistent from tournament to tournament, while McIlroy managed to win the tournament that mattered most to him this season.

The 36-year-old now has six major championships, while Scheffler has four. The American won the Masters in 2022 and 2024 before adding the PGA Championship and The Open in 2025.

Shipnuck described McIlroy as the “rabbit” that Scheffler is still chasing, even though the American is clearly ahead when current form and the world ranking are considered.

Both golfers are aiming to win more majors, but that road will be filled with many challenges.
