Bryson DeChambeau is one of the more interesting figures in golf, attracting attention both with his comments and his performances at big tournaments.

Greg Norman believes LIV Golf played a very important role in helping Bryson DeChambeau build one of the biggest YouTube channels in professional golf.

DeChambeau was already a big name before leaving the PGA Tour in 2022, but his popularity has grown further in recent years. The American won his second US Open title in 2024 and has also built an audience far outside regular golf fans through his videos.

His channel had around 2.8 million subscribers and more than 650 million views by August 2026. DeChambeau has played golf with athletes, celebrities and online creators, while his Break 50 series has become one of the best-known formats in golf content.

Norman now claims that the freedom LIV gave its players was a big reason why DeChambeau was able to do all of that.

Norman says LIV gave DeChambeau freedom

The former LIV CEO spoke about DeChambeau during a recent appearance on Golf Digest’s The Real Deal podcast.

“I would say Bryson’s in the right place at the right time with the right personality and the right vision, but he can only have that because of LIV because we gave him his IP rights,” Norman said.

“When you’re not playing a LIV tournament, you can go do whatever you want, you can monetise your IP. If you want to wear blue jeans and a white t-shirt and make money, go for it.”

The Australian believes that freedom allowed the two-time US Open champion to spend more time building his own brand away from tournaments.

“So he saw this incredible moment of time for himself, and I’m so happy and so pleased for him that he has maximised on that,” Norman added.

Norman also claimed that DeChambeau would have had a much more difficult time doing the same thing if he had remained on the PGA Tour.

“If he stayed with the PGA Tour, he would have no chance, because the PGA Tour would own his IP, unless that’s changed in the last couple of years,” he said.

“That gave him the opportunity, and I bet you there’s a lot of players on the PGA Tour saying, ‘why am I not doing that?’”

The 71-year-old also stressed that LIV’s shorter schedule helped DeChambeau. The league had 14 events, leaving players with more free weeks.

“So kudos to him, I think he’s done a phenomenal job with how he’s balancing himself with this,” Norman said.

“And again, LIV allowed him to do that because he only had 14 events and then the major championships of course, so he had the time to be able to go and focus on other things that could move on in perpetuity for him beyond LIV and beyond the PGA Tour.”

DeChambeau has used that time to create videos with names such as Stephen Curry and John Daly. His video with Donald Trump also became one of his most watched.

DeChambeau is now in a very different position

The interesting part is that DeChambeau’s personal brand may now be more important than ever.

LIV Golf faces an uncertain future after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund decided not to continue funding it beyond 2026. The league has entered Chapter 11 proceedings and is trying to find new investment for 2027.

Bryson has been one of LIV’s most recognizable players since joining in 2022. Earlier this year, he admitted that the decision to stop PIF funding surprised him, but he also said he was ready to help the league find a way forward.

“I’m giving all I can to make it happen, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t happen,” DeChambeau said in May.

His current LIV agreement runs through the end of 2026, which makes his next move one of the biggest questions in golf.

The PGA Tour has also said it is not planning another special return program for LIV players, so any path back may not be simple.

For DeChambeau, however, YouTube gives him something many other professional golfers do not have. His audience does not depend completely on where he plays tournament golf.

That is close to the point Norman was making. LIV gave DeChambeau more freedom when he joined, but the 33-year-old then used that freedom to build something that can continue even if his professional schedule changes.

DeChambeau has repeatedly said he wants to grow golf and bring the sport to younger fans. His videos have become a big part of that plan, and the numbers show how far the channel has gone.

The next few months may decide where he plays in 2027. Whatever happens with LIV, DeChambeau now has a platform that reaches millions of people without needing a tournament to be taking place.
