The American has never hidden that he believes team golf can work. In May, shortly after the PIF decision became official, DeChambeau admitted that players did not expect the Saudi fund to leave so quickly.

“We were surprised that they pulled out as quickly as they did. We didn’t really see that coming,” DeChambeau said.

The experienced golfer still remained optimistic, stressing that he believed there was a business plan which could make sense for team golf.

“I’m giving all I can to make it happen, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t happen,” he said.

Those comments came at a time when nobody could be certain what LIV would look like after 2026. The PIF invested more than $5 billion into the league after its launch, but said the amount of money required in the future was no longer in line with its investment strategy.

DeChambeau has had many reasons to remain connected with LIV. He has won five times on the circuit since joining and also took the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst, his second Grand Slam tournament victory.

His 2026 LIV season included wins in Singapore and South Africa, while the American finished second in the season standings behind Jon Rahm.

His results in the Grand Slam tournaments were more difficult. DeChambeau missed the cut at the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open before finishing tied for 14th at The Open.

There were still moments when the experienced American appeared ready to consider a different path. Earlier this year, DeChambeau said focusing more on YouTube could be a realistic option if LIV disappeared.

“I’d love to do a bunch of dubbing in different languages, giving the world more reason to watch YouTube,” he said.

He also stressed at the time that he would be interested in playing tournaments that wanted him, showing that his future was not completely clear during the first part of the season.

LIV 2.0 could look very different in 2027

The reported LIV 2.0 model would be different from the original version of the league. The plan is expected to include 10 teams with four players on each team, while another 50 golfers could enter events through an open format and qualification routes.

That would create 90-player fields, with the bottom 30 golfers being cut during each tournament. Prize money is also expected to be lower than during LIV’s first years, with reports putting purses at around $7 million to $9 million.

The financial situation remains complicated. Reuters reported at the end of August that LIV was preparing for a possible bankruptcy filing while also trying to secure new investment for a reduced operation in 2027.

Private equity group BC Partners has been linked with a possible investment of around $300 million as LIV tries to find a way to continue without PIF funding.

Not every current LIV player appears ready to stay. Reports have suggested that Bubba Watson and David Puig will not be part of the new project, while Jon Rahm’s future has also attracted a lot of attention.

Bryson DeChambeau, as one of the biggest names in the controversial golf league, would be of huge importance to LIV Golf. The question is whether his plans and LIV’s plans really match, and whether the American golfer is truly ready to enter a new adventure.
