Kai Trump has only just started her life as a college student, but the 19-year-old already knows what she wants her first year at the University of Miami to look like.

The freshman is part of the Hurricanes women’s golf program and has now started her collegiate career, something she had been preparing for long before arriving on campus. While Miami is famous for its nightlife and many students may be interested in the social side of college, Trump says her priorities are quite different.

The granddaughter of U.S. President Donald Trump explained that being a student-athlete has left her with a demanding routine, and golf is taking up a large part of her days. “College life is fun. When you’re a student athlete, that makes it hard to be honest with you,” Trump said.

Her schedule begins very early, as she wakes up at around 5 a.m. and normally does not get to sleep until around 10:30 p.m. With golf, classes and other responsibilities filling the day, she admitted that she has not had much time to see what Miami has to offer away from campus and the golf course.

“I feel like I haven’t really explored Miami yet because I’m so busy with the golf and stuff like that,” she said. “I’m here for golf. I’m not here to party in Miami so I guess it’s okay.”

Trump puts golf first as her Miami career begins

The comments show how seriously Kai is taking the start of her college career. She committed to Miami in August 2024 and later officially signed with the program as part of its 2026 recruiting class.

Miami lists Trump as a freshman from Stuart, Florida, and notes that she arrived with experience on the Srixon Medalist Tour, AJGA and South Florida PGA circuits. Her junior record also includes several high finishes in Florida events, while she helped her high school team win four consecutive district titles.

The Hurricanes entered the 2026-27 campaign ranked No. 21 in Golf Channel’s preseason women’s college golf rankings, so Trump is joining a program with expectations and competition for places. Miami also added fellow freshmen Bella Dovhey and Carlee Rogers to the roster.

Her first appearance for Miami came at the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, where she competed as an individual.

The opening round was not easy. Trump started her college career with a 7-over 78 and sat tied for 102nd in the 120-player field. There were still some positive moments, including a birdie at the 12th hole after beginning her round on the back nine.

She then improved in the second round, shooting a 5-over 76 to move to 12-over for the tournament and climb to a tie for 92nd. That was a small step in the right direction as she continued getting used to a different level of competition.

LPGA experience gave Trump an early look at bigger stage

Trump had already experienced a much bigger golf stage before beginning college. In November 2025, she received a sponsor exemption into The Annika and made her LPGA Tour debut at Pelican Golf Club in Florida.

Her first round there was difficult, as the American amateur shot a 13-over 83. Trump later admitted that nerves affected her, but she responded in the second round with a 5-over 75, an eight-shot improvement.

“For the first day I was definitely really nervous. I think the nerves just got to me,” Kai said at the time. “When I went out there today, I felt very calm and peaceful, to be honest with you. That’s why I played better.”

She finished the tournament at 18-over and missed the cut, but the experience gave her the chance to compete alongside established LPGA players before starting her college career.

Trump also said after the event that preparation helped her deal with the pressure, even if nerves could never completely disappear. “I did everything I could possibly have done for this tournament. So, I think if you prepare right, the nerves can … they’re always going to be there, right? They can be a little softened. So, I would just say that.”

That approach appears to be continuing at Miami. Trump is still at the beginning of her freshman season and will need time to adjust to college golf, but her comments make clear that she is not treating the experience as a social holiday.

For now, the focus is on golf, classes and adapting to the student-athlete routine. After rounds of 78 and 76 at the Golfweek Fall Challenge, Kai entered the final round at 12-over, looking to finish her first collegiate tournament with another improvement.
