Jordan Spieth has spent much of 2026 showing flashes of the golf that once made him one of the biggest names on the PGA Tour, but the results have still not followed often enough.
The 32-year-old entered the FedEx St. Jude Championship without a top-10 finish on the PGA Tour this season and sitting 54th in the FedEx Cup standings. He needed a big week in Memphis to continue into the BMW Championship, and for a while he looked capable of producing it.
Spieth opened with rounds of 65 and 69 at TPC Southwind and shared the first-round lead. But a 72 on Saturday left him with too much work to do, and an even-par 70 on Sunday resulted in a tie for 19th. He finished 52nd in the FedEx Cup standings, two places outside the top 50 who advanced.
The disappointment was obvious, but Spieth still left Memphis speaking with confidence about where his game is heading. That confidence has not convinced everyone.

Fans question Spieth after another season without a win
Spieth has 13 PGA Tour victories, but his most recent came in 2022. He has repeatedly insisted that his golf is closer to the level he wants than his finishes suggest, and several fans reacted strongly after hearing similar comments following his playoff exit.
One fan wrote: “Sorry but Jordan continues to be in denial about the state of his game. He’s running on a combination of vibes, inspiration and improbable recoveries.”
The same supporter added that Spieth remains entertaining to watch but needs to “address reality” if he wants to return to the elite level.
Another viewer was even more direct.
“Looks completely lost out there; honestly think he needs to play every single weekend if he can for the next 6 months,” the fan said.
Others questioned whether changes are now needed around Spieth. Cameron McCormick has been his longtime coach, while Michael Greller has spent almost his entire professional career as his caddie.
“Totally delusional. Change your putter, get a new coach who gets you back to playing naturally and time for a new caddie,” another fan wrote.
A different supporter simply said: “Fire your whole team. It isn’t working.”

The reaction reflects the frustration around a player who achieved so much at a very young age. Spieth won three majors before turning 24 and completed three legs of the career Grand Slam by winning the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
However, he has now gone more than four years without a PGA Tour victory. His 2026 season again contained good stretches, but he was unable to turn them into a top-10 finish.
Spieth still believes the next good run is close
Spieth sees his situation differently from many of the fans criticizing him.
At Royal Birkdale in July, he said his ball-striking had been good enough to contend during the major season but his putting had prevented him from getting the results he expected.
“I’m quite frustrated with the results considering I know where my game is at,” Spieth said before The Open.
That belief remained after his season ended in Memphis.
Spieth explained that Saturday’s 72 had made his task much more difficult and admitted that he needed to be almost perfect during the final round to qualify for the BMW Championship. He was two under through 10 holes on Sunday before dropping shots during the difficult middle section of the back nine.

Even after missing out, he did not sound like someone preparing to make major changes.
“I’m very, very confident in what’s coming,” Spieth said.
He also said that this would be “the last time I finish like this for a while,” suggesting that he expects his results to look very different when he returns.
Spieth felt he had made a few poor decisions about what he was working on during a six-week period and simply ran out of time to correct them before the FedEx Cup playoffs.
His PGA Tour season is now finished, but missing the top 50 also means he has not automatically secured places in all of the 2027 Signature Events. That could make any starts he chooses to make during the fall even more important.
For Spieth, the argument is simple: he believes the quality of his golf is better than the results indicate. Some fans clearly no longer want to hear about how close he is.
The next part will be proving it when he returns to competition. With his 2027 schedule likely to look different, the fall gives Spieth another chance to turn that confidence into the type of finishes that have been missing throughout 2026.
