Jackson Koivun has made an immediate impact since turning professional, and his performances have already caught the attention of some big names in golf.

The 21-year-old ended his college career at Auburn earlier this summer after winning two national championships and three SEC individual titles. He made his final appearance as an amateur at the US Open, where he finished tied for 23rd, before making the move to professional golf.

It did not take Koivun long to show that he was ready for the PGA Tour. He won the 3M Open in only his third start as a professional, finishing at 25-under and setting a new tournament scoring record.

Koivun also had to deal with Scottie Scheffler making a late charge. The world No. 1 shot a final-round 63, but Koivun remained calm and closed with a 66 to win by three shots.

His fast start continued at the Wyndham Championship, where a T29 finish was enough to secure the final spot in the FedExCup Playoffs. Koivun finished the regular season 70th in the standings despite only turning professional earlier this summer.

Rory McIlroy’s putting coach Brad Faxon has now explained why he believes Koivun has everything needed to have a very successful career on the PGA Tour.

Faxon has worked with some of the biggest names in golf, including McIlroy, and he has spent plenty of time around young players trying to establish themselves at the highest level.

However, Koivun has apparently made a particularly strong impression on the eight-time PGA Tour winner.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Golf podcast, Faxon stressed that it is not only Koivun’s talent that has caught his attention. He also pointed to the amount of work the young American puts into his game.

«Jackson Koivun dominated college and he is the hardest working kid I have ever seen,» Faxon said.

«He comes blessed with a great putting stroke and a great putting attitude.

I spend a lot of my time at the Titleist Performance Institute, where you can do all the testing of your equipment.

I first met Jackson there and talked about his game.

Every single guy who did the club fitting and ball fitting, was saying, ‘nobody is close to what this guy is doing’.

We have seen how good he hits the iron as well so I am excited for him.

I am a long-term believer in Jackson Koivun.»

Faxon’s comments come at a time when Koivun is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about young players on the PGA Tour.

His college record had already created plenty of expectations before he turned professional. Koivun finished his Auburn career with 42 points in the PGA Tour University Accelerated program, more than twice the number needed to earn PGA Tour membership.

There are always questions about how quickly a successful college player can adapt to professional golf, but Koivun has needed very little time.

His 3M Open victory was perhaps the clearest example. Koivun entered the final round with a three-shot advantage after shooting 61 on Saturday and then played a bogey-free final round to hold off Scheffler.

The victory also moved him 124 places in the FedExCup standings and gave him a realistic opportunity to reach the Playoffs despite starting his professional season several months after most of his rivals.

Koivun now has another big opportunity in front of him

Koivun eventually completed that job at the Wyndham Championship.

He entered the final regular-season event around the FedExCup cutoff and finished T29 to take the 70th and final position available for the Playoffs. It means his season will continue at the FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind.

Koivun admitted after the Wyndham Championship that reaching the Playoffs had been one of his goals, even though his late start made it much more difficult.

«At the end of the day it’s kind of the season-long goal, to make the playoffs,» Koivun said.

«Obviously starting a little late is definitely a hiccup in the road, but to be able to be in this position’s really cool.»

His next challenge will be trying to move further up the standings. Only the top 50 after the FedEx St. Jude Championship will qualify for the BMW Championship, before the field is reduced to 30 players for the Tour Championship.

Koivun could also have something else to play for over the coming weeks.

His victory at the 3M Open quickly started a discussion about whether he could earn a place on the United States Presidents Cup team. The Americans will face the International Team at Medinah in September, and Koivun’s performances have put him in the conversation despite his lack of experience.

His victory over a field that included Scheffler certainly helped his case. After the 3M Open, Scheffler himself pointed out how prepared the latest generation of college players are when they arrive on the PGA Tour.

«We’re seeing a lot of really, really good young talent in the game today,» Scheffler said.

«When you see the guys come out of college, they’re really, really prepared, even more prepared than we were coming out.»

Koivun still has plenty to prove after only a handful of starts as a professional, but his first weeks on the PGA Tour have gone about as well as he could have hoped.

A PGA Tour victory, a place in the FedExCup Playoffs and growing Presidents Cup talk have all arrived within weeks of his decision to turn professional.

And judging by Faxon’s assessment of his work ethic, the 21-year-old has no intention of slowing down.
