American Ryan Gerard holds the sole lead at the prestigious BMW PGA Championship—a DP World Tour event held at Wentworth (UK)—following the completion of the second of four rounds. It was a disastrous day for Spain’s Jon Rahm, who suffered a total collapse and failed to make the cut, finishing last in the field.

On Friday, Gerard carded a 65 (7-under-par) for a two-round total of 132 (-12), vaulting into the lead. He holds a two-stroke advantage over Australia’s Adam Scott and Italy’s Filippo Celli, and sits three shots ahead of the duo comprising England’s Aaron Rai—Thursday’s co-leader—and Spain’s Manuel Elvira, who shot a 66 featuring eight birdies and two bogeys.

Trailing by four strokes is a group of five players, most notably world number two Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Spain’s Nacho Elvira; the latter holed a 16-meter putt on the 7th hole en route to a score of 69.

McIlroy carded a 67 to climb the leaderboard and stake his claim at Wentworth—a venue where American Patrick Reed failed to reach the weekend due to a left-hand injury.

Jon Rahm was eliminated from the tournament after another disastrous day, finishing at +5 for a total of +11—leaving him in last place—in one of the worst performances of his ten-year professional career.

To find a similarly poor performance, one would have to go back to the 2018 US Open, when Rahm missed the cut and finished with a total of +15.

On the second day at Wentworth—one of the European Tour’s most important events—the former world number one carded a double bogey, five bogeys, and two birdies (one more than in the previous round). This left him in last place while the nearly 150 competing players were still finishing their rounds.

The Basque golfer’s collapse in the English tournament adds to other disappointments this season, such as missing the cut at the US Open last June—where he finished at +6—marking the first time since 2019 that he failed to play the full weekend at a major.

He also failed to perform well at the Masters in Augusta in April, finishing 38th, and at the British Open, where he placed 46th, resulting in him wrapping up his third consecutive season without winning a Grand Slam.

Rahm found some consolation in finishing second at the PGA Championship and securing his third consecutive title as the season’s best player on LIV—the Saudi-funded league where, this year, he won tournaments in Mexico and Hong Kong.

His poor run of form—evident at Wentworth and in other events this season, such as last week’s Irish Open where he finished twenty-third—coincides with uncertainty regarding his future and whether he will remain with LIV.

The 2021 US Open and 2023 Masters champion stated last Tuesday that he would not clarify until the end of the season whether he would participate in the new «LIV 2.0» project, noting that a «long legal process» must be resolved «before many things can be finalized.»

Rahm is under a current contract with LIV—signed in late 2023 when he joined the circuit—and it remains to be seen whether he will reach an agreement to part ways and attempt a return to the US-based PGA Tour, or choose to continue with the new project.

Another factor—this one personal—facing the «Lion of Barrika» is the upcoming birth of his fourth child, a daughter, expected in the first half of October.

This is the reason he has not yet confirmed his participation in the Spanish Open (October 8–11), an event he has always made a point of attending.

His schedule for the year concludes with the DP World Tour finals in Abu Dhabi and Dubai during the first two weeks of November.
