Chris Gotterup is preparing for his first Presidents Cup appearance, and there could be one very well-known guest watching the American team at Medinah Country Club this week.

US President Donald Trump is the honorary chairman of the 2026 Presidents Cup and has said that he plans to attend the event in Illinois. Trump held the same position when the competition was played at Liberty National in 2017.

Gotterup was asked about the possibility of the President appearing during the tournament. The 27-year-old said he would welcome a visit from any president who wanted to watch the players represent the United States.

“Yeah, I think everyone, you know, whoever the President is, if they care enough to come watch us play golf, that’s pretty cool,” Gotterup said.

“So I know we’re excited, and we’re going to go try to put on a good performance for everyone.”

Gotterup is one of three Presidents Cup rookies on Brandt Snedeker’s American team. Jacob Bridgeman and Jackson Koivun will also make their first appearances in the competition.

Bridgeman was also asked about the possibility of presidents attending the tournament and said it would add another interesting part to the week.

“Yeah, I’m assuming hopefully we’ll have a bunch of Presidents out. That would just be amazing to meet them and have them rooting us on, pulling for our country, and it makes it feel even more patriotic,” Bridgeman said.

Trump has been around big golf events several times in recent years. He attended the opening day of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, becoming the first sitting US president to attend that competition.

The 2026 Presidents Cup will also be his second time serving as honorary chairman after previously having the role in 2017. The PGA Tour announced in August that Trump had accepted the position and intended to be at Medinah.

Gotterup will have another reason to enjoy the week regardless of who is watching.

The American has had his best PGA Tour season in 2026. He has won three tournaments this year and has moved to No. 7 in the Official World Golf Ranking. His victories came at the Sony Open, WM Phoenix Open and John Deere Classic.

Gotterup has now won five times on the PGA Tour overall. His first title came at the Myrtle Beach Classic in 2024 before he added the Genesis Scottish Open in 2025.

Snedeker selected him as one of his six captain’s picks after Gotterup finished seventh on the US points list. The American captain said the 27-year-old had worked hard for the opportunity and liked the way he handled big situations during the season.

Another question for Gotterup is who will become his partner during the team matches at Medinah.

One option could be Cameron Young. The pair know each other from spending time in Florida and also work with some of the same people, although Gotterup believes their golf games are quite different.

“Kind of funny, we were talking it about it this week that we never really overlapped in the Met section at all, but it feels like we should have,” Gotterup said.

“Yeah, he’s one of the guys that I’ve gotten to know better and play with a bunch in Florida. We work with similar people on our teams and stuff.

Yeah, we definitely play different, but similarly. It’s kind of funny, like I feel like he does the opposite of what I do, like big high draws, and I’m kind of hard low cuts.

So I think we make a good potential pairing together.”

Young earned his place automatically and will make his second Presidents Cup appearance. Gotterup, meanwhile, enters the competition without previous experience in either the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup.

The United States has won the Presidents Cup 13 times, with one International Team victory and one tie. The Americans have also won the last 10 editions of the event. Their most recent victory came in Montreal in 2024, when they won 18.5-11.5.

Snedeker’s team includes Scottie Scheffler, Young, Wyndham Clark, Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa as automatic qualifiers. Gotterup, Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Koivun and Bridgeman complete the 12-man group.

The competition begins Thursday, September 24 at Medinah Country Club and finishes on Sunday. Geoff Ogilvy will captain the International Team as the visitors try to end the United States’ long winning run in the event.
