The PGA Tour—the most prestigious circuit in the world—was stunned this Sunday by Jackson Koivun’s victory at the 3M Open. He claimed his first title in just his third professional tournament, a feat of precocity that highlights the 21-year-old’s championship pedigree and immense potential.

Last month, Koivun announced he was foregoing his final year of college at Auburn to turn professional—a decision he carefully considered following his strong performance at the U.S. Open. He finished 23rd in that Grand Slam event, which ultimately proved to be his last tournament as an amateur.

Fueled by a sensational round of 61 on Saturday, Koivun won the 3M Open by three strokes over world number one Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler’s weekend surge (rounds of 64 and 63) and fierce final-round pursuit ultimately fell short against the poise and composure of his young compatriot.

«Here comes Scottie! Here comes Scottie! I kept hearing that from the crowd, and I definitely felt some nerves, but I tried to ignore it and just keep playing my game,» Koivun said after his victory.

«Trying to win your first title is always incredibly difficult, especially for a young player fresh out of college. I think this shows not only how talented he is as a player but also the mental strength he possesses,» the world number one said, praising Koivun’s composure. Jackson had already started the tournament well (64-68), but he surged into the lead with a spectacular round on Saturday (61)—an impeccable performance featuring two eagles and six birdies without a single blemish. He remained bogey-free on Sunday as well; his five birdies (66) were enough to crown him champion at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine.

Less than two months ago, Koivun was helping Auburn University win its second NCAA Championship in three years (2024, 2026). Suddenly, he finds himself surrounded by the world’s best golfers—and beating them—with a dazzling score of 259 (25-under-par). These are outstanding figures, especially for a rookie fresh to the PGA Tour.

Koivun has just arrived on the professional scene following three historic seasons at Auburn, where he swept the three national Player of the Year awards—the Ben Hogan Award, the Jack Nicklaus Award, and the Fred Haskins Award—in both 2024 and 2026.

In 2025, Koivun also received the Mark H. McCormack Medal, awarded annually to the world’s number-one ranked amateur golfer—an honor previously claimed by current stars such as Patrick Cantlay (2011), Matt Fitzpatrick (2013), Jon Rahm (2015), and Joaquín Niemann (2017). Jackson was named Southeastern Conference Player of the Year three times (2024, 2025, 2026), setting records for wins (11), overall scoring average (68.89), and single-season scoring average (68.20 in 2025–26).

As an amateur, Koivun played in 10 PGA tournaments and signaled his intentions early, stringing together three consecutive top-10 finishes last year at the ISCO Championship (6th), the Wyndham Championship (5th), and the Procore Championship (4th).

After the US Open, he made his professional debut by missing the cut at the John Deere Classic, but by his second tournament, he had already cracked the top 10, finishing 10th at the ISCO Championship. As if it were easy, the third time was the charm: a victory at the 3M Open—his first on the world’s premier tour.
