Tiger Woods has been in the spotlight for reasons that are already well known to golf fans.

Tiger Woods’ legal case in Florida has created another question connected directly with his possible future in professional golf, and this time the discussion is about whether the 15-time major champion can still drive a golf cart.

The 50-year-old appeared in court on Wednesday and pleaded no contest to reckless driving after a rollover crash in March near his home on Jupiter Island. His driver’s license was suspended for five years, while Woods was also fined $1,500 after refusing to submit to testing following the accident.

The original DUI charge was not part of the final outcome. Prosecutors said there was not enough proof of impairment, while pharmacy records showed that Woods had lawful prescriptions for pain medication.

That legal decision quickly created another issue for golf fans. Tiger has dealt with many injuries during the second half of his career and walking full rounds has become much more difficult for him. Because of that, the possibility of using a golf cart could become important if he decides to return to competitive golf.

DeSantis reacts to the golf cart question

Florida State Attorney Thomas Bakkedahl was asked after the hearing whether the five-year suspension would also stop Woods from operating a golf cart.

“You know what? You’ve got me. We’ll have to look into that, I’ll get back to you,” Bakkedahl said.

The question soon reached Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who gave a much more direct answer on social media.

“Tiger should be able to drive a golf cart on the golf course,” DeSantis wrote.

The situation was later clarified further. Florida law allows people who are at least 18 years old to operate a golf cart without a driver’s license, and officials said Woods would therefore still be allowed to use one on a golf course.

That is quite important for a player who has gone through numerous operations on his back, knees and legs over the years. His physical condition has already made walking one of the biggest problems whenever discussions about another comeback begin.

Woods himself has previously made a clear difference between using a cart on the regular PGA Tour and using one in events where carts are normally allowed. He said in the past that he would not use one in standard PGA Tour competition, but that he would have no problem doing so on the PGA Tour Champions or at events such as the PNC Championship.

The American became eligible for the PGA Tour Champions after turning 50 in December 2025. That tour allows players to use carts, something that has naturally created more speculation about whether Woods could eventually compete there.

Woods still has no date for a golf return

The bigger problem is that nobody knows when Woods will actually play competitive golf again.

His last official tournament appearance came at the 2024 Open Championship. Since then, the experienced American has continued dealing with different physical problems and underwent another back procedure.

Earlier this year, Tiger said he was still trying to recover and gave no timetable for a return. After the March crash, he then announced that he was stepping away from professional golf to seek treatment and focus on his health.

He made his first public appearance after treatment in June, when he spoke about future changes to the PGA Tour schedule. Woods remains an influential figure inside the sport even while he is not competing.

Woods has 82 PGA Tour victories and 15 major titles, with his most recent major victory coming at the 2019 Masters. Injuries and surgeries have made his appearances much less frequent since then, but he has never officially closed the door on playing again. 

There is little doubt that the experienced golfer still has a big desire for success and to pick up the clubs again. However, there are many factors that will influence whether Woods will compete again in the coming period.

The five-time Masters champion is still eligible for several important events because of his career achievements, while PGA Tour Champions gives him another possible path now that he is over 50.

Fans are excited and are closely following his situation, but also his recovery process, hoping that they can once again watch some of his great shots. While Tiger is no longer a player who can perform at his absolute peak, his presence alone at prestigious tournaments is enough reason for many people to follow those events.
