Tiger Woods remains in the center of attention even when he is not present on the golf course.

Brian Rolapp has stressed that Tiger Woods did not try to create special rules for himself while helping the PGA Tour build its new competition model.

The 50-year-old was named chairman of the Future Competition Committee in August 2025. The group was given the task of looking at how the circuit could change its schedule, membership system and qualification paths in the future.

Those discussions eventually led to the new Championship Series and Challenger Series model, which will begin in 2028.

«Tiger has been consistent,» Rolapp said. «He wants to do what’s best for the PGA Tour. That he is looking long-term about it.

His focus had been on trying to make the PGA Tour live way past any of us. That clearly was his orientation.»

Woods worked on the committee alongside Patrick Cantlay, Adam Scott, Camilo Villegas, Maverick McNealy and Keith Mitchell, as well as three business advisers.

Woods could have a difficult path to the Championship Series

The PGA Tour confirmed this week how players will qualify for the new two-level system when it starts in 2028.

The Championship Series will be the upper level and is expected to have the best players competing together more often. The Challenger Series will give other golfers a path back toward that level through promotion.

For the transition into 2028, the top 70 players in the final 2027 FedExCup standings will earn Championship Series membership. The top 95 after the FedExCup Fall will also receive access.

There is another path through career achievements. Players inside the top 25 or top 50 of the career money list can use a one-time exemption for 2028, but they must have played at least 15 PGA Tour events in 2027.

That condition could be difficult for Woods.

The former world No. 1 has not played 15 Tour events in one season since 2018 and has not appeared in an official PGA Tour tournament since 2024.

He is still exempt for the 2027 season through his career achievements, while he also has places in the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open as a past winner.

The American could also qualify for the Championship Series by winning a PGA Tour event in 2027.

Woods has dealt with many physical problems in recent years and has played very little competitive golf. His latest competitive appearance was in TGL earlier this year.

For that reason, fans immediately started asking how the new rules could affect one of the most successful players in golf history.

Woods has been involved in the changes from the beginning

The Future Competition Committee was created with the idea of changing how the PGA Tour works over the long term.

When the group was announced last year, Rolapp said the goal was not to make small changes. He wanted the committee to look at the full model and find ways to make the competition easier to understand while also bringing the best golfers together more often.

Woods later spoke positively about the process and said the committee had started with a blank sheet of paper.

«We started with a blank slate, what would the best product we can possibly create, what would it look like, OK?» Woods said last December.

He also stressed that many different ideas were discussed before the final model started to take shape.

The PGA Tour approved the two-series structure in June. Under the plan, the Championship Series will include around 23 or 24 event weeks, with the biggest tournaments and a postseason included.

The Challenger Series will run at the same time and will include players trying to earn promotion to the higher level.

The latest membership rules are another step before the system starts in 2028.

Woods has played a big part in those talks, but Rolapp wants people to understand that the golfer was thinking about the future of the circuit rather than his own position.

It is still not clear how much competitive golf the 50-year-old will play in 2027.

His schedule could decide whether the one-time career exemption is available to him for the first Championship Series season, while a victory would provide another path.

One thing is certain, fans are eagerly waiting for his return, although they are aware that there are still many questions around the future of the golf legend at this moment.
