Ryan Fox believes the International Team can learn a lot from Rory McIlroy and the European Ryder Cup team before trying to end the United States’ long dominance at the Presidents Cup.

The New Zealander will make his debut in the team event next week at Medinah Country Club. He arrives there after a big season, which included winning The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in July.

Fox knows that beating the Americans will be difficult. The United States have dominated this competition for a long time and will again have Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and several other well-known names in their team.

However, the 39-year-old has been looking at what Europe managed to do in the Ryder Cup.

Europe beat the United States 15-13 at Bethpage Black last year, with McIlroy once again playing an important role. Fox feels that the way European players work together could be useful for the International Team.

«I think we can learn a lot from [Europe],» Fox said at the BMW PGA Championship. «Just not being intimidated by it, and I feel like we know a lot of the European players really well, and if these guys can do it, we can do it, too.

I think we can definitely emulate them and take a little bit out of how they get together as a team. I think the European Team has done a really good job of that over probably the last decade, maybe even longer, just having as one collective goal.»

Fox believes the International side is getting closer to creating the same environment before the competition in Chicago.

«I feel like we’re getting pretty close to that as an International Team. Certainly feels like that this year. I think that’s the way we win: have that collective goal, all buy into it, and it will be an exciting week for us next week.»

Fox wants to speak with McIlroy

Fox has a good opportunity to get more information from European players this week.

He is competing at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, where many members of last year’s winning Ryder Cup team are also playing. McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Tyrrell Hatton are among the names in the field.

The Open champion revealed that he had already spoken briefly with Lowry and planned to talk with McIlroy before leaving England.

«I talked to Shane on the putting green, and no doubt we’ll be having a chat with Rory the next couple of days,» Fox said. «Yeah, they are all great guys to talk to. Obviously they have had a lot of success as a team, as well.

Hopefully I can pick Rory’s brain about what they have done well as a team. But you feel like, I don’t want to be nasty about it, a collective anti-American Team; we want to beat them.

Most of us live there. We like it over on the PGA Tour, I’m not going to lie, but it’s our one chance a year to go, ‘Okay, we want to stop the Americans because it’s a fun thing to do.’ We haven’t done it yet as a national team, but I’ve always enjoyed watching Europeans do it.»

McIlroy has a lot of experience in this type of competition. The Northern Irishman has played in eight Ryder Cups and helped Europe win on several occasions, including last year’s event in New York.

Unity has often been mentioned as one of Europe’s biggest qualities in the Ryder Cup, and Fox wants the Internationals to create something similar.

International Team has a difficult history against USA

The International Team has had very little success against the Americans since the Presidents Cup started in 1994.

Their only outright victory happened in 1998 at Royal Melbourne in Australia. The 2003 event in South Africa ended in a 17-17 tie, while the United States won all of the other editions.

The Americans have now won 10 Presidents Cups in a row. Their latest victory was in Montreal in 2024.

Geoff Ogilvy will captain the International Team at Medinah. His automatic qualifiers are Si Woo Kim, Hideki Matsuyama, Fox, Tom Kim, Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott.

Sungjae Im, Corey Conners, Nick Taylor, Nico Echavarria, Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Ryo Hisatsune were later added as captain’s picks.

Fox enters the week as one of the most successful players in the team this season. His biggest moment happened at Royal Birkdale, where he birdied the final hole to win The Open by one shot over Cameron Young.

The experienced golfer finished 10-under for the week and became only the second New Zealander to win the Claret Jug.

The well-known golfer now has a big responsibility in front of him. His goal is to help his side achieve a big result, although he is aware that the task will be very difficult.
