The 2026 Tour Championship has already managed to make ten million dollars disappear before the first tee shot.

The figure still circulating is $20 million for the winner, but that’s not the figure for the 2026 Tour Championship. The Starting Strokes system rewarded the season, but produced a tournament in which someone seemed to have played nine holes on Wednesday without notifying the rest of the field.

It was canceled in 2025. Now the formula is clean: 30 players, 72 holes, no cuts, and everyone on par. Whoever scores the lowest wins the Tour Championship, the FedExCup, and $10 million.

So on Thursday, Scottie Scheffler, first with a season of 12 top-ten finishes and two victories, will start with exactly the same score as Ryan Fox, thirtieth and last qualifier with 1,368 points.

Not just any thirtieth, either: the Open Championship champion. Fox managed to hold onto the last possible spot ahead of Kurt Kitayama by just 65 points. In what other tournament could the world number one and the winner of the latest major simultaneously represent the top and bottom of the field?

This reset makes the Tour Championship much more fair and much more unpredictable. Scheffler remains the best player. Fox remains the last to enter. But neither will be able to use previous results to shave a stroke off Thursday’s score.

East Lake is configured as a 7,440-yard par-70. Water enters on eight holes; the fairways narrow in the landing zones, often forcing players to choose the correct side to open the angle toward large, elevated, bermudagrass greens. A long but out-of-position drive can leave a worse shot than one 20 yards shorter. A slightly imprecise iron can roll into the collection areas and turn a birdie attempt into a complex test of your short game.

The renovation completed by Andrew Green in 2024 restored many elements of Donald Ross’s design: more strategic bunkers, less automatic lines from the tee, more visible slopes, and greater importance given to attack angles. It’s one of those courses where the television shows a seemingly innocuous flag and the player sees six different ways to make a bogey.

Length helps, but it’s not enough. East Lake requires quality in Strokes Gained: Approach, because many second shots come with medium-long irons, and in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green, because the course rewards the complete game more than a single specialty. Then there’s accuracy off the tee, bogey avoidance, and efficiency from beyond 200 yards. Against 29 other pros, avoiding the wrong side and a double bogey is more important than the ability to find a spectacular birdie.

If the rain forecast, especially for the first two rounds, actually arrives, the course will play even longer. Less roll off the tee will mean less comfortable hitting the greens; the softer surfaces, however, will allow for hitting flags that are normally prohibitive. It will likely be easier to stop the ball and more difficult to get it to its destination.

The ideal profile is clear: controlled power, long irons, no real weaknesses, and a putter that doesn’t waste previous work.

The problem is that the four most important indicators (absolute quality, course history, recent form, and experience) this week point to four different players.
