Tiger Woods pleaded guilty to reckless and negligent driving and refusing to take a urine test in a brief hearing Wednesday at the Martin County Courthouse in Florida. The 50-year-old golf legend thus avoided the more serious charge of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Already seriously injured in his right leg in another accident in 2021, the 15-time major winner was arrested on March 27 by Martin County police after crashing into a truck he was trying to pass on a two-lane road. Although the car overturned, Woods escaped injury, as did the truck driver. But police suspected Woods was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and he was arrested for refusing a urine test after initially testing negative for alcohol. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying painkillers. He was detained for eight hours before being released that same night.

In April, Woods announced he would be taking a break from golf for a while «to undergo treatment» following his arrest for the accident.
