Scottie Scheffler admits he is not the most active person in the United States team group chat, but the world No. 1 believes the atmosphere around Brandt Snedeker’s team is better than at any point he can remember.

The Americans are preparing to face the International Team at Medinah Country Club, where they will try to win the Presidents Cup for an 11th consecutive time.

Scheffler is making his third appearance in the competition and his sixth overall appearance for the United States in a team event. He has already played in three Ryder Cups, while his previous Presidents Cup appearances came in 2022 and 2024.

Before the action starts, the 30-year-old was asked how much he is involved in the team group chat.

«I’m probably the worst texter on the team easily,» Scheffler said.

«I don’t know how the other team texts, but I’m probably worse than them too, and some of those guys English is their second language, and I’m probably even worse than them at texting.

So I don’t know. I’ve chimed in a few times, but not much.»

Scheffler may not send many messages, although he has noticed something different around the American team this week.

Scheffler likes the atmosphere inside the team

The United States team includes several players who have spent a lot of time together in recent Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.

Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa and Sam Burns all have previous experience in this type of competition. There are also new faces, including Jackson Koivun, Chris Gotterup and Jacob Bridgeman.

For Scheffler, having good relationships away from the course is useful, but he also stressed that friendship alone does not automatically make someone a good teammate.

«I think when you look at the core of our team the last few years, we’ve all been very, very close,» Scheffler said.

«There’s different levels to that. I think you can be really close with somebody and maybe not be the best teammate.

I think right now we’ve struck a really good balance of being great friends and having fun with each other, but also understanding like — especially when you’re with guys. Giving each other the needle is a ton of fun. Guys love doing that to each other.»

Scheffler has not always had easy weeks in team golf.

His overall Presidents Cup record before Medinah is 3-5-1. All three of those victories came in Montreal in 2024, when he finished that week with a 3-2-0 record as the United States won the event for a 10th straight time.

This season has also given Scheffler another reason to arrive in Chicago with confidence. He won three PGA Tour events in 2026, including the FedEx St. Jude Championship and Tour Championship, and finished the regular season at the top of the golf rankings.

The American believes the full team is now moving in the same direction.

«I think when you get in the team environment, the guys this week have been really supportive of each other,» he said.

«I feel like our team environment is the best it’s ever been. I really feel like we’re working as a unit now and, like I said, excited to get the week going.»

Ryder Cup will be another test for United States

The Presidents Cup has been a much happier competition for the United States than the Ryder Cup in recent years.

The Americans have won the last 10 Presidents Cups and hold a 13-1-1 overall record in the event. Snedeker’s team now has the chance to extend that run at Medinah against Geoff Ogilvy’s International Team.

The Ryder Cup story has been different.

Europe defeated the United States 15-13 at Bethpage Black in 2025. The Americans made a late Sunday push, but Luke Donald’s team had built a big enough lead during the first two days.

Scheffler was part of that United States side and will have another opportunity in 2027 if he qualifies for Jim Furyk’s team.

The next Ryder Cup will be played at Adare Manor in Ireland from September 13-19, 2027. Donald has already been confirmed as European captain for a third consecutive edition, while Furyk will lead the United States.

Europe is trying to win the trophy for the third time in a row after taking the 2023 and 2025 editions.

The more immediate job for the Americans is Medinah.

Scheffler may remain quiet in the group chat, but he believes what is happening inside the team room can help once the matches begin on Thursday.

The United States opens the Presidents Cup as the defending champion, while the International Team is trying to record its first victory in the competition since 1998.
