Donald Trump had a surprise message for the crowd at the Irish Open after Shane Lowry completed one of the biggest wins of his career at Doonbeg.

Lowry dominated the tournament and finished 23-under, 11 shots ahead of Joaquin Niemann and Patrick Reed. It was the Irishman’s second Irish Open title, 17 years after he won the event as an amateur in 2009.

Trump, who owns the Doonbeg course, stayed for Sunday’s final round and presented the trophy to Lowry. However, the U.S. President then moved away from golf and announced that he plans to remove the American tariff on Irish whiskey.

Trump said the subject had been raised with him by Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and by Lowry himself.

“Everyone has been bugging me saying, ‘Would you do me a favour? It’s so unfair what’s going on. Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey?’” Trump said.

“And I said on behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off Irish whiskey.”

The crowd around the 18th green reacted with loud cheers. The tariff is currently 10 percent, after earlier being set at 15 percent under the wider U.S.-European Union trade arrangement. Trump did not give a date for when the change would take effect.

The decision could be quite important for Irish producers because the United States is the biggest export market for Irish whiskey. The Irish Whiskey Association welcomed Trump’s announcement and said it wanted to see a return to zero tariffs for beverage trade.

Lowry jokes about his role in Trump’s decision

Lowry had another reason to smile after his victory. When he was asked about the tariff announcement, the experienced golfer joked that Irish distillers may now owe him something.

“He also announced he was removing tariffs on whiskey because of me… so distillers better start sending me a cheque,” Lowry said.

When reporters asked if he had pushed Trump on the issue, Lowry answered: “I’ll take credit for that.”

The 39-year-old had spent time with Trump before the final round. Lowry attended a dinner on Saturday evening where Rory McIlroy was also present. Trump later watched Lowry start his round and stayed around the course before handing him the trophy.

Trump was visiting Ireland for two days and held talks with Martin before traveling to Doonbeg. The tariff on Irish whiskey was one of the economic subjects discussed during that visit.

Irish whiskey had been facing a 10 percent U.S. tariff while Scotch whisky and whiskey made in Northern Ireland did not have the same charge. That difference had created concerns among Irish producers and politicians.

Trump’s announcement came only minutes after Lowry finished a week that he will probably remember for a long time.

The former Open champion started Sunday with a four-shot lead but quickly moved away from the rest of the field. He ended the tournament 11 clear, setting a new record winning margin for the Irish Open on the European Tour.

Lowry ends long wait for individual victory

The victory was also important because Lowry had not won an individual PGA Tour or DP World Tour event since the 2022 BMW PGA Championship.

He had been close several times during 2026 but struggled to finish some tournaments. Earlier this season at the Cognizant Classic, two double bogeys in his final three holes cost him a possible victory.

Lowry admitted after his Irish Open win that some of those defeats were difficult to accept.

“So Dubai was difficult. Cognizant was pretty hard. But I would go back to the Sunday of the Masters was especially difficult for me this year, and I feel like after that, a lot of wind went out of my sails,” Lowry said.

He also explained that taking some time away from competition helped him reset before returning.

“And then the more you kind of keep trying to play through it, the harder it can get sometimes. So to take a few weeks off and kind of reset was nice.”

This time there was no late collapse. Lowry was already far ahead when he reached the 18th hole and finished the tournament with another birdie.

The Irishman also shared the final walk with his former caddie Dermot Byrne, who returned to his bag earlier this year. Lowry said afterwards that he could not have been happier to walk the 18th fairway with Byrne.
