The PGA Tour, the American golf circuit, announced Tuesday that the Tour Championship, the season-ending tournament, will be played in a two-week match play format starting in 2028, as part of its historic restructuring.

«The culmination of our season must live up to the journey we’ve taken to get there. The result is a season-ending structure that rewards excellence throughout the year, while also laying the groundwork for a revamped Championship,» said PGA CEO Brian Rolapp at a press conference at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

«We’re creating something different, something distinctive within professional golf that can have repercussions far beyond this,» he added.

The future postseason will consist of a 72-hole Championship Series final in its traditional format, open to the top 90 players at the end of the regular season.

In addition, the top 32 finishers will earn the right to participate in the Tour Championship, a separate event in match play format that will last two weeks and include several courses not used on the circuit.

«The first week will feature 32 participants divided into eight groups of four players for three days of group play. Each participant will face the other three players in their group in separate matches, and the top two from each group will advance to Week 2,» explained the PGA Tour.

In that second week, the 16 remaining players will compete at a different venue in a knockout format until only two undefeated golfers remain, who will then compete for the championship.

The PGA stated that it will announce the complete schedule and venues for this new postseason on February 22, 2027.

Starting in 2028, the PGA will be divided into two divisions and will incorporate a system of promotion and relegation between them, allowing for more frequent matches between the top players.

The restructuring establishes a main league, the PGA Championship Series, made up of the top 120 players, and a schedule of 23 or 24 tournaments between February and August, including the majors and team tournaments such as the Ryder Cup or the President’s Cup, and a second division, the PGA Tour Challenger Series.
