The legendary Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio—one of Tiger Woods’ all-time favorite golf courses—is preparing to be without a professional tournament for the first time in 72 years of uninterrupted history.

The PGA Tour circuit thus loses one of its most famous and selective stages.

The historic streak of consecutive events, which began way back in 1954 with the Rubber City Open and continued through the recent PGA Tour Champions tournaments, has come to an end. It has been officially announced that the Senior Players Championship (currently known as the Kaulig Companies Championship) will leave the historic Ohio course.

The final tournament in Akron will be held in July.

Starting in 2027, the tournament will move to California, to the Newport Beach Country Club in March.

The event will be sponsored by the Hoag healthcare company and will be renamed the Hoag Senior Players Championship at Newport Beach.

The professional tour will deeply miss Firestone, a course characterized by narrow, tree-lined fairways and the iconic and unmistakable 125-foot-tall water tower (p. 1).
