Martin Kaymer, a German golfer who is part of LIV Golf, recently spoke to the BBC about the current state of the competition. Cleeks team captain reflected on the remaining tournaments this season. 

The next event will be held in Staffordshire, followed by tournaments in New York and Indianapolis.

Kaymer believes that the tournament in Indianapolis will most likely take place, while he is not completely sure about the other events. He pointed out that during his conversations with LIV Golf executives, he realized that the situation is not ideal and that there are still no clear guarantees about what will happen next year.

Scott O’Neil, CEO of LIV, also does not have all the answers, stressing that much depends on the decisions of potential investors.

«I know that Indianapolis is most likely happening,» said Kaymer, who is captain of the Cleeks team.

«There was a conversation on Wednesday: Michigan, highly unlikely. According to Wednesday, it didn’t look good.

We were hoping for a bit more information [from the meeting]. We got the information but we were more looking for decisions or what is happening next year.

Unfortunately, even Scott can’t tell us because he doesn’t know. It depends so much on the investors.»

However, LIV Golf has not only suffered a financial blow. A few days ago, the Asian Tour also decided to enter into cooperation with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, which further complicated LIV’s position and left this league without an important partner.

Martin Kaymer is still trying to remain optimistic, hoping that the right investor will be found willing to invest money in this ambitious project. However, if no one is willing to support LIV Golf, there is a real possibility that this project could experience a serious decline or even a collapse.

«Hopefully, I think there’s a lot of interest and it’s looking good. But we’ve all been there. If the signature is not there, then it doesn’t mean anything,» said the German.

«If those investors decide to pull out then we don’t play next year on LIV.

And if they decide to do it, then we have a chance.»

What will happen?

Experts and analysts are already trying to predict what could happen to LIV in the coming period, and many believe that this league could go through major changes if it does not find a new financial partner.

One of the most realistic scenarios is a drastic reduction of the budget and the possible shutdown of certain tournaments. If LIV Golf manages to survive, it is expected that the prize funds for basic tournaments will be reduced to around 10 million dollars, which would represent a significant drop compared to the previous amounts. 

Also, the final Teams Championship in Michigan, which was worth as much as 40 million dollars, is under a big question mark due to the lack of financial resources. Before that, the tournament in Louisiana was already canceled for similar reasons.

The main task of the new CEO of LIV Scott O’Neil is to find new investors. He is trying to attract about $350 million in private capital to keep the league going, but many analysts believe that will be an extremely difficult task.

An additional problem for LIV is its increasing isolation from the rest of the golf world. The latest blow comes after the Asian Tour’s decision to end its partnership with LIV Golf and join a global strategic partnership with the PGA Tour and DP World Tour. With this move, LIV loses an important channel for connecting with other competitions and moves further away from traditional golf structures.

Many believe that this situation could lead to the return of big stars to traditional tours. 

The fact that players like Martin Kaymer publicly admit that they don’t know if LIV will exist in the future further shows the level of uncertainty within the league. Also, Jon Rahm, one of LIV Golf’s biggest and most expensive additions, did not want to guarantee that he would remain a part of this project in the long term.

Analysts believe that players like Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and Joaquin Niemann could in the future look for a way to return to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, even with possible financial consequences, in order to protect their careers, maintain a competitive level and be part of the main golf scene again.
