Spanish golfer Jon Rahm admitted on Tuesday that, following his performance at the British Open last Sunday—where he finished in 46th place—it «hasn’t been a good season in the majors,» despite the second-place finish he secured at the PGA Championship in May.

Rahm took stock of his performance in the four majors held so far during a press conference in Rocester, central England, where the UK tournament of LIV—the Saudi-backed league—begins this Thursday.

«Overall, each major was a different experience. I wouldn’t say, by any means, that it has been a good season in the majors. At Aronimink [PGA Championship], I had a great week, but I wasn’t able to seal the deal. I played really poorly on Sunday,» analyzed the former world number one, who had not spoken to the media after the British Open concluded.

Regarding the British Open, Rahm wasn’t upset with his general play, but rather with his putting performance and the two errors he made off the tee—one on the first hole on Saturday and another on Sunday—which cost him double bogeys on both occasions.

«Starting both days of the weekend the way I did was like a bucket of cold water. You’re constantly playing catch-up on a course that was getting tougher by the day, and that’s not easy at all… Starting with a double bogey on Sunday and finishing with another was devastating. Having three double bogeys over the weekend kills any chance you have,» he lamented. Reflecting on the week, he noted: «If I had to sum up the week in a single idea, I’d say I simply didn’t manage to sink the necessary putts. I did a lot of things right, but when the ball doesn’t go in time and again, it ends up being frustrating.»

With three events remaining, Rahm could secure his third consecutive LIV title in the UK if he wins the tournament and American Bryson DeChambeau does not finish alone in second place.

«It means much more than just winning. It means you’re playing high-level golf consistently and that the work you’re putting in is paying off. I’ve always taken great pride in being a consistent player—in racking up lots of top-ten finishes—and I think that’s what ultimately leads to victories,» he argued.

Regarding LIV’s future following the uncertainty caused by the withdrawal of Saudi funding, the «Lion of Barrika» explained that there had been contact with executives, though he declined to reveal any details.

When asked if he expects to continue playing next year on the circuit launched in 2022, Rahm insisted: «I can’t share anything I know right now.»

«I’m always optimistic. I make a living playing golf. It’s hard to be too upset with life when you’re that lucky. Even though you might see me looking very frustrated on the course at times, off the course I’m a very different person than many people think,» the Basque golfer added.
