Scottie Scheffler finished the PGA Tour season with another trophy at East Lake, but after winning the Tour Championship, the world No. 1 spoke about something that has bothered him during tournaments.

The 30-year-old came from three shots behind Viktor Hovland in the final round and closed with a 4-under 66 to finish at 16-under, three strokes clear of the Norwegian. It was Scheffler’s third victory of the season and his second FedExCup.

Scheffler is known for staying completely focused inside the ropes. That mentality has helped him remain at the top of golf, although he admitted after Sunday’s round that it sometimes means he does not give enough attention to fans.

“I don’t know. I think days like today are really fun. Being able to come from behind and win is a really cool feeling,” Scheffler told CBS.

“There is a lot of talented guys in front of me on the leaderboard. I was fortunate to get off to a good start and put myself in the mix.

The crowd this week has been amazing. The support that I have gotten week in and out on the PGA Tour has been tremendous.”

Scheffler then explained that his concentration can make him look closed off while he is competing.

“I have a tendency to keep my head down and stay in my own lane when I’m playing but it’s really fun when you are able to win and celebrate with the fans in moments like these and have my family here.

I feel bad sometimes, I really do keep my head down and focus as much as I can. But I hear all the cheers and I’m very thankful for all of them.”

Scheffler talks about staying focused on the course

The American had to stay patient because Hovland entered Sunday with a three-shot lead. Scheffler quickly reduced the difference with two early birdies and was level less than an hour after starting.

Hovland remained close for much of the day, but bogeys on the 13th and 17th opened the door. Scheffler birdied the 16th and then safely completed the final hole.

The world No. 1 finished the week with rounds of 65, 67, 66 and 66. His final score of 264 was three better than Hovland.

Scheffler said the comeback was another example of something he was proud of throughout the season. There were tournaments where he started poorly, but he continued fighting.

“I think that is something I am very proud of. When you look over the course of the season, especially after some of the tough starts, shooting over par on the PGA Tour is never a good spot to be in,” he said.

“I am proud of fighting back and giving myself some chances to win, even after some of those poor starts.

Overall I just continue to battle day in and day out. It’s something I am very proud of. It’s a gift to be out here on Tour and I am going to give it my very best.”

Scheffler still finished inside the top five 13 times and ended the year as the world No. 1.

Hovland praises Scheffler after another victory

Scheffler has often said that records and money are not the main reason he competes. His focus has been on preparation and giving his best every day.

“I don’t take tournaments off. I don’t take days off during tournaments. I try to give it my all each and every day,” Scheffler said.

“I don’t want to look back at the end of my career and feel like I could have done more in order to play well. I want to be able to tell myself when I hang it up that I did everything I could.”

Hovland also explained why Scheffler is so difficult to beat. The Norwegian believes the American understands that he does not need to force things when others begin making mistakes.

“I don’t think he is trying to do too much with it,” Hovland said.

“He knows that he’s got an edge on most guys out here, so he doesn’t have to do anything crazy. He can play smart and just kind of pick his spots, stay in it constantly.”

Scheffler finishes the season with three victories, five runner-up finishes and the Tour Championship trophy. He also collected the $10 million winner’s prize and moved past Tiger Woods at the top of the PGA Tour’s official career earnings list.

There is no doubt that the future is bright for this golfer, who is aiming to keep his world No. 1 position next year as well and not allow anyone to take him off the throne.
