Matthew Southgate won the HotelPlanner Tour’s Swiss Challenge with a commanding performance. The Englishman closed the tournament with a final-round 62 (-9), sealing the victory with an eight-shot advantage over his closest rivals.

The 37-year-old from London dominated the final day at the Golf Sempach course, starting in pursuit of fellow countryman George Bloor (leader after 54 holes) and overtaking him with authority. An immediate birdie on the first hole, two more on the next three holes, and a decisive acceleration between the sixth and eighth holes: Southgate reached -20 on the ninth hole and followed it up with three birdies on the back nine, closing at -23 with two more birdies on the final two holes.

“I played exactly as you would dream,” Southgate commented. “I wanted to start strong and felt very comfortable. I followed the plan without ever forcing it, I putted fantastically, and I never let up in concentration. It was a wonderful week.”

With this result, Southgate moves up to ninth place on the Road to Mallorca, gaining important positions in the race for promotion to the DP World Tour, where he already has over 300 appearances.

Among the Italian players, the best performer was Lorenzo Scalise, 32nd with a total of -8 (75-64-66-71). Scalise played a solid tournament, nearly breaking the top 20 with a nice third round of 66, but suffered a more controlled final round.

Aron Zemmer and Jacopo Vecchi Fossa failed to make the cut. Matteo Cristoni, however, retired during the first round.

Completing the podium were George Bloor, Tom Sloman, Hamish Brown, Julian Perico, Tadeas Tetak, Martin Vorster, and Marc Warren. Haydn Baron, Alex Goff, Veer Ahlawat, and Sebastian Freidrichsen tied for ninth, while Louis Albertse finished alone in 13th.

The Road to Mallorca now moves to Austria for the Interwetten Open (June 11-14) at the Schladming-Dachstein Golf Club in Oberhaus.

As the season gets underway after the first European legs, the Swiss Challenge (June 4-7, 2026) represents a key event on the HotelPlanner Tour calendar. It is played on the Woodside course at Golf Sempach, near Lucerne, one of the most prestigious and scenic courses on the circuit.

The winner will join a list of highly respected champions: past successes include Rafa Cabrera Bello (four-time winner on the DP World Tour and Ryder Cup protagonist), local favorite Joel Girrbach (the only Swiss to triumph in the event), Dan Hillier, Scotsman Euan Walker, and two-time Tour winner Felix Mory. This year’s field also includes Nick Bachem, winner on the DP World Tour, who will be looking for crucial points for his return to the top European circuit. Also defending their recent form will be recent winner Ryan Van Velzen and Finland’s Tapio Pulkkanen, fresh from his victory in the Danish Golf Challenge, as well as former champions such as Benjamin Hebert and Alexander Knappe.

Italian fans’ attention is focused primarily on our representatives: Lorenzo Scalise, Matteo Cristoni, Aron Zemmer, and Jacopo Vecchi Fossa will be on hand to deliver top-level performances and collect valuable points on the Road to Mallorca.

The Lucerne club is located in an enchanting location, surrounded by the imposing peaks of Pilatus, Rigi, and Titlis, providing a breathtaking backdrop. The Woodside Course, where the tournament will be played, is the longest championship course in Switzerland: 18 holes, par 72, and 6,637 meters in length, a challenging layout that requires precision and power.
