Italy dominated the McGregor Trophy, thanks to its success in the Nations Cup in England, held at Clitheroe Golf Club (Lancashire). The tournament, also known as the English Boys’ Under-16 Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship, included Alessandro Comparone (Ambrosiano), Luca Di Mauro (Arzaga), Gabriele Dossi (Franciacorta), Samuele Ferrario (Varese), Leonardo Girardi (Asolo), Mattia Pagani (Arzaga), Tommaso Regoli (Parco di Roma), and Leonardo Zanardi (Arzaga). They were accompanied by federal coach Giovanni Magni and his coach Gian Maria Rean Trinchero. In the Nations’ Cup, Team Italy 1, composed of Alessandro Comparone, Luca Di Mauro, and Mattia Pagani, finished at the top of the standings (+3), ahead of England (+4), Ireland, and Spain 2 (+11).

In the individual tournament—won by Ireland’s Ollie McEvoy after a play-off with Finland’s Valtteri Lindroos—the best Italian finish was Alessandro Comparone, who finished mid-table with a score of 296 (72, 72, 78, 74, +12).

The competition, with 144 competitors, was played over 72 holes, with a cut after 36 holes, which will advance the top 40 finishers and those tied for 40th to the final two rounds, scheduled for the third and final day.

The event, founded in 1982 and now in its 44th edition, has been won twice by Italians: in 1996 by Edoardo Molinari and in 1997 by Roberto Paolillo. The roll of honour includes the names of Englishmen Justin Rose (1995), Marco Penge (2013), Steve Webster (1992) and Jim Payne (1986, 1987), the latter two having won the Italian Open in 2005 and 1996 respectively, and the Dane Rasmus Hojgaard (2016).
