Making a prediction about the future of LIV Golf today is like trying to figure out the entry point of your ball after hitting a drive into a water hazard on a foggy November day.

Since the PIF, the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, announced the end of its financial support for LIV Golf, the League’s path has naturally become one of obstacles, which have gradually increased in number and size.

Liv Golf, situation

Proceeding in no particular order:

Repeated rumors from various sources regarding LIV Golf’s imminent filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy (which corresponds to a composition with creditors in our legal system);
A summons in the Miami District Court for missed payments (approximately $1 million) by Mobii Systems Group Ltd., the Canadian supplier of the «Any shot, any time» technology, one of the gems of the League’s broadcasting system;
The almost certain cancellation of the Team Championship (currently still scheduled), scheduled for the end of this month at The Cardinal at Saint John, Michigan (it would be the second event of the season after the New Orleans tournament);
An email, which, as reported by Flushing.it, was sent early last week to a number of employees and external collaborators, announcing the termination of their relationship with LIV Golf with 30 days’ notice;
Last, but not least, the majority of players are seeking more or less arduous paths to return to the DP World Tour or the PGA Tour, even in the short term.
Through all of this, Scott O’Neil, CEO of LIV Golf, has not stopped for a moment, on the one hand, seeking new investors capable of supporting the (financially) demanding management of the League, and on the other, reassuring players, media, and fans as much as possible about the immediate future of LIV.

Regarding the search for new sources of funding, the search, which began after the Masters Tournament, appears to have been successful.

Last Wednesday, the League published a statement on its institutional website and social media channels:

There are two key points:

A preliminary agreement has been reached with an investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, which will be finalized in September;

LIV Golf 2.0 envisions the players becoming majority shareholders.

Regarding point 1, Scott O’Neil did not disclose further details (in particular, the name of the investor).

Point 2, however, offers more insights.

The statement was published following two meetings held on the sidelines of the Bedminster event, one led by O’Neil, with the Board and Team Captains in attendance, and a second, reserved for all players only, where Bryson DeChambeau served as speaker.

Details about the first meeting are lacking, while the players’ meeting was the most widely covered by the media, who tried to glean as much information as possible, albeit with little success.
