Kai Trump has started a new chapter in her golf career at the University of Miami, with the 19-year-old making it clear that sport is the main reason why she is there.

The granddaughter of Donald Trump joined the Miami Hurricanes as a freshman after previously competing in several junior events in Florida. Her college career officially started at the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in South Carolina, where she is competing as an individual.

Trump had to wait for this moment after undergoing surgery on her left wrist earlier this year. The procedure addressed damage around her ECU tendon and triangular fibrocartilage complex, with the young golfer spending the following months working on her recovery.

Her first college round brought a score of 78, seven over par. Trump made a birdie at the par-three 12th and reached the turn at two over before a more difficult second nine. She finished the opening day tied for 102nd in a field of 120 players.

Still, the beginning of her college journey is about much more than one round.

Kai Trump says she is at Miami for golf

Kai has spoken openly about what her daily life now looks like after becoming a college athlete.

The freshman stressed that her schedule starts very early and often leaves little time for the other things usually connected with college life.

“I wake up every day at like 5:00am and then I don’t normally go to sleep until like 10:30,” she said.

“I feel like I haven’t really explored Miami yet because I’m so busy with the golf and stuff like that. I’m here for golf. I’m not here to party in Miami so I guess it’s okay.

College life is fun. When you’re a student athlete, that makes it hard to be honest with you.”

Miami opened its 2026-27 season by winning the Boilermaker Classic, although Trump was not part of the team lineup at that tournament. The program then gave selected players an opportunity to compete individually at the Golfweek Fall Challenge from September 6-8.

Trump and teammate Carlee Rogers were selected to represent Miami as individuals in South Carolina.

The 19-year-old already had tournament experience before college. According to Miami, she competed on the Srixon Medalist Tour, AJGA and South Florida PGA circuits and collected several high finishes in Florida junior events. She was runner-up at the 2025 Major Championship at Village Golf Course and also helped her high school win four consecutive district team titles.

Her first months of 2026 were quite different because of the wrist problem.

Trump announced in January that surgery had been required and said at the time that she was looking forward to being able to play without pain again. Before the injury, she had also made her LPGA Tour debut at The Annika in November 2025.

Trump is adjusting to a different life

Moving to college has also brought changes away from golf.

Kai recently spoke emotionally about leaving her family in Jupiter to begin life at Miami. She documented part of the move through her YouTube channel and admitted that saying goodbye was difficult. 

The young golfer will have to get used to a new lifestyle, and the change will probably be quite big for her. However, there is little doubt that Kai is ready to turn a new page and begin a new chapter in her life, with the desire to achieve the goals she has set for herself.

Her first period at school also included a case of strep throat, which temporarily sent her back home before she returned to campus.

The main focus for her right now will be golf, a sport she has loved since she was very young. It seems that much of that love came from her grandfather, US President Donald Trump.

The University of Miami has nine scheduled team competitions during the 2026-27 season, along with additional individual opportunities during the fall. After the opening events, the Hurricanes are also scheduled to compete at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic later in September.

Trump’s arrival naturally attracts more attention because of her family name. She is the eldest granddaughter of Donald Trump and has already built a large social-media following alongside her golf career.

However, her first weeks at Miami have shown what she wants to focus on. Early mornings, training, tournaments and recovery have taken priority over exploring the city or college parties.

There will be many more rounds before anyone can judge what level Kai can reach in college golf. Her opening 78 was only the first competitive round of what could become a four-year college career.

For now, the young golfer is finally competing again after the wrist surgery that interrupted her progress earlier this year, and the Golfweek Fall Challenge gives her the first chance to see where her game stands against college competition.
