The future of LIV Golf has become a big talking point after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund decided to end its financial backing of the league after the 2026 season.
PIF has invested more than $5 billion into LIV since its launch, helping the league sign names such as Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Cameron Smith. LIV has since found a new lead investor, but the circuit is still preparing for major changes from 2027. The schedule is expected to drop to 10 events and prize money will also be reduced.
There have also been more questions about the players.
Koepka has already returned to the PGA Tour, while Patrick Reed left LIV earlier this year and is working his way back to the American circuit. Reports have also said that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour have been listening to other LIV players interested in changing tours.
LIV’s situation became even more difficult when it decided to end its 2026 season early. The Team Championship in Michigan was cancelled, meaning this week’s tournament in Indianapolis will now finish the season. It was the second LIV event to be cancelled since PIF announced its decision.
Rahm has already secured his third consecutive LIV individual title, but there is now major doubt over whether the popular Spaniard will still be part of the league next year.

Rahm reportedly agrees terms with PGA Tour
According to a report from the Tee Times account on X, Rahm has agreed terms that would allow him to return to the PGA Tour in 2027.
The report claims the two-time major champion would have to make a $25 million payment to charity as part of the agreement.
It also claimed Rahm would not immediately receive access to all of the PGA Tour’s signature events and would have to earn his places rather than receive sponsor exemptions.
The same report suggested Legion XIII general manager Geoff Ogilvy is trying to find a similar agreement for Tyrrell Hatton, although no deal has been completed.
Those details have not yet been confirmed by Rahm or the PGA Tour.
However, the latest rumor comes only days after another report claimed LIV officials were becoming resigned to losing Rahm after the end of this season. The Telegraph reported that the DP World Tour is also increasingly confident that the 31-year-old will play more events on the circuit in 2027.
Losing Rahm would be a big blow for LIV.
The former world No. 1 has become one of the faces of the league since joining at the end of 2023. He has won four LIV tournaments and three consecutive individual season titles.

Rahm’s position has changed during the year
What makes the latest reports interesting is that Rahm was saying something very different only a few months ago.
When the PGA Tour created a special pathway that allowed certain major champions to return earlier this year, Rahm decided not to take it.
«I’m not planning on going anywhere,» Rahm said in January.
«I wish Brooks the best. As far as I’m concerned, I’m focused on the league and my team this year and hopefully we can repeat as champions again.»
Rahm also stressed in May that his LIV contract did not finish at the end of 2026. The Spaniard said he had multiple years remaining and admitted at the time that he did not see «many ways out» of the deal.
But his answers became less clear as LIV’s future started to change.

In July, Rahm confirmed that players were being kept informed about the talks over LIV’s new investors.
«We know a lot of what’s going on, yeah,» he said.
However, when asked to give more details, Rahm pointed out that there was nothing he could share publicly at the time.
The 31-year-old has also tried to stay away from the business side of LIV. When asked in June whether he could help the league attract investors, Rahm made his position clear.
«It would be more of a stay-in-your-lane type situation as it goes to me,» he said, stressing that his job was to play golf rather than find money for the league.
There have already been some signs of Rahm moving closer to traditional golf.
He reached an agreement with the DP World Tour in May to settle his outstanding fines, remain a member and protect his chances of playing in the 2027 Ryder Cup. He also returned to a PGA Tour co-sanctioned event at the Scottish Open in July, his first non-major PGA Tour appearance since the 2023 Tour Championship.
Rahm was delighted to be back playing the Scottish Open and said winning on Scottish soil would mean a lot to him.
For now, there has been no official confirmation that he is leaving LIV or returning to the PGA Tour.
