Prior to McIlroy’s historic tournament win, the two sat down for lunch in Florida where Rory detailed, shot by shot, his plan to attack Augusta National Golf Club.

Nicklaus listened to the plan, confirmed that he would change absolutely nothing, but stressed that the key to success was discipline and avoiding the mistakes that had put Rory out of the race in previous years.

The following year, McIlroy asserted his dominance at Augusta and successfully defended his title. He defeated Scottie Scheffler by one stroke to secure his second consecutive green jacket. He joined the elite as only the fourth golfer in history to defend his Masters title, joining legends such as Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods.

Memorial Tournament

Rory McIlroy is currently tied for 19th place after the first two rounds at this year’s Memorial Tournament, 10 strokes behind the leading American J.T. Poston. 

The Northern Irish golfer opened the prestigious tournament at the iconic Muirfield Village course with a promising one-under par (71) on Thursday. However, during Friday’s second round, he shot a worse 74 (+2 over par for the day), which included three birdies, three bogeys and a costly double bogey on the third hole.

Although the configuration of the course designed by Jack Nicklaus suits him perfectly on paper due to the importance of precise and long tee shots, McIlroy admitted to reporters on Sky Sports after the second round that Muirfield Village is strategically forcing him to use his driver less often this year and to play much more cautiously.
