Brandt Snedeker has taken responsibility for the United States’ difficult position at the Presidents Cup and admitted that he does not believe he has done enough as captain this week.

The Americans will start Sunday Singles at Medinah Country Club trailing the International Team 10.5-7.5. Snedeker has regularly praised his players during the competition, but after Saturday he decided to put more pressure on himself.

«I don’t think I’ve held up my end of the bargain,» Snedeker said.

The former PGA Tour winner had already said during an NBC interview that he was proud of his players despite some of his own mistakes.

He later explained that choosing pairings and finding the right situations for 12 different golfers has not been simple.

«I tried to work my tail off to put these guys in the best situation possible, and I don’t think I’ve done a very good job this week to be where we are right now,» Snedeker said.

«They look to me to put them in the best position where they’re comfortable. I hold myself to a high standard. I don’t think I’ve done the best job for them in that room.»

Snedeker also admitted that he has spent time questioning some of his own decisions.

«There’s a thousand different ways I can think of right now,» he said. «I’ve been honestly second-guessing myself a lot to be in this situation.»

Snedeker defends Scheffler decision

One decision which received a lot of attention was leaving Scottie Scheffler out of Saturday afternoon’s foursomes session.

Scheffler had played in the opening three sessions, but Snedeker decided that the world No. 1 needed some rest before Sunday Singles.

«It was obviously a tough decision, really hard decision to sit the best player in the world and probably one of the best players I’ve ever seen in person,» Snedeker said.

«I just want to put him in the best situation tomorrow to go out there and have a great day and get some rest.»

Snedeker also stressed during NBC’s coverage that one player cannot win the Presidents Cup alone.

«Scottie Scheffler is not going to go out there and win us 15 points. We have to go out there as a team and do this together,» he said.

The Americans split Saturday afternoon’s foursomes session 2-2 with the International Team.

Cameron Young and Chris Gotterup produced one of the biggest US wins of the session, beating Adam Scott and Sungjae Im 6&4.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay also delivered a point for the home side, while the International Team took the other two matches.

The visitors had already created a big advantage on Friday after winning all five foursomes matches and moving into a 7-3 lead.

Saturday gave the United States a chance to reduce that deficit, but the International Team continued to hold a three-point advantage going into the final day.

Snedeker still praised the way his golfers responded.

«I thought our guys battled hard,» he said. «It was a tough day out there. This golf course got really tough this afternoon.»

US needs big Sunday at Medinah

The United States now has 12 singles matches left to change the situation.

Snedeker has put Cameron Young, Wyndham Clark, Justin Thomas and Scheffler in the first four matches, hoping they can quickly put pressure on the International Team.

«We’ve got some studs up there at the top of the lineup that are going to go out there and hopefully put a bunch of red on the board, get this crowd behind us,» Snedeker said.

«We’ve got some studs throughout the whole lineup.»

Scheffler will face Nico Echavarria in the fourth singles match.

The US needs 7.5 points on Sunday to reach a 15-15 tie and retain the Presidents Cup. Eight points would give the Americans an outright victory.

Snedeker has told his players not to spend too much time looking at the overall scoreboard.

«Our message to our guys is: ‘All you can do is go win your one point,'» he said.

«What’s on the board doesn’t matter. The only thing they’re in charge of that’s in front of their faces, the one point in front of their faces, the one match in front of their faces.»

History is still on the American side. The United States has a 13-1-1 overall Presidents Cup record, while the International Team’s only victory came in 1998.

However, the visitors are now in one of their best positions before Sunday Singles.

Snedeker expects his players to continue fighting despite the difficult situation.

«I know what kind of person I am. I know how hard I’ve worked to be in this position. I know what kind of guys we have on that team,» he said.

«These guys are going to fight and claw tomorrow. They’re going to go out there and give it everything they’ve got.»

The US captain also finished Saturday by once again putting the focus back on his players.

«I’m so proud of them to be in the situation we’re in,» Snedeker said. «We’ve got a great game plan for tomorrow. These guys are studs. We’re going to get them out there and get them going tomorrow.»
