Everything had started well for the 46-year-old Spaniard. He had even positioned himself very well after the first 18 holes, having carded a 68 (-4).

However, it was the break between his two tee times that compromised his second round. The current LIV player carded a second round of 75 (+3), finishing seven strokes shy of the fifth and final qualifying spot.

Before starting his second 18 holes, Sergio Garcia admitted to eating lasagna in the players’ lounge, but it’s safe to say it didn’t agree with him at all. «I ate a little in the players’ lounge, and it wasn’t a success. I only ate lasagna. It didn’t agree with me, and I felt nauseous throughout the front nine. In the afternoon, I felt like I was going to throw up on almost every hole.»

The Spaniard even considered withdrawing after nine holes, but he persevered. «Yes, I really thought about quitting after nine holes.» But I thought, «Come on, let’s play a few more to see if I can find my rhythm,» but unfortunately, it didn’t work out.

In recent years, failing to qualify for The Open has become a recurring issue for the 2017 Masters champion, but that hasn’t discouraged him from trying again to secure his spot in the future, by whatever means necessary.
